There was already hunger for a left-leaning alternative prior to Bernie jumping in. Ironically, it was the draft Warren push that pointed to a lane for a progressive to pop on the national stage.

You can't go indie and only speak to the left. In what reality do you live in?

You need as much support as possible in doing that. The last person who was able to do that was Ross Perot.
And when he came so close Bill Clinton wanted to ensure that never happened again, so he formed the debate commission, and they decide the front runners and it's never 3rd party.
