I think that health was a part of it, but you really don't think a part of her was being selfish?
She married him knowing he loved football and to be an all time great you have to commit everything you have to the sport. She didn't like that and gave him the ultimatum.

My guess is that she also saw how hard it was on his mental heath and the physical toll of trying to continue and she couldnt continue to stand by as they had plenty of money and to her it just wasnt worth the risk.
