There are rumblings that a fight, between WBA, IBF and WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev and WBA super middleweight ruler Andre Ward (28-0, 15KOs), is in the early stages of discussion for sometime in 2016.
Kathy Duva, the head of Main Events (which promotes Kovalev) confirmed to BoxingScene.com on early Friday evening - ''I've had another conversation this week with the people from Roc Nation and it is definitely something that is being discussed and ultimately likely to happen."
Kovalez (27-0-1, 24KOs) faces Nadjib Mohemmedi on July 25th at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, while Ward recently returned to the ring on June 20th in Oakland, dispatching Paul Smith in nine rounds at a catch-weight of 172 pounds.
So when will this showdown take place?
"As far as Sergey is concerned, right now, we have a plan for him to fight in Russia this fall and then probably come back on HBO in February or March," Duva explained.
"If that can be the Ward fight and I'm not sure it can because I think he's talking about fighting in November or December. So we're probably looking at next spring."
It's still up in the air if Kovalev's return to Russia will be televised Stateside on HBO, which just recently signed him to a long-term deal.
"It's possible if HBO can accomodate it, yes. It will depend on their schedule - which is never easy anywhere. We're trying to find a date that works for both entities, the arena in Russia and HBO."
