Sure, I think he's guilty of it to some extent, too, though being raised "white" complicates things here a bit, I think. I definitely think his Christianity was strategic- joining a Black church when trying to come up in Chicago, then joining and Evangelical one when hitting DC, etc. I think he is probably more of a multireligious/all religions are valid type at heart. You see him rocking those bracelets with symbols from all religions on them, which you'd never see most of these other politicians do.

He's an Atheist or Deist. I have no doubts about it.

His mother was raised by non-practicing Christians; his father was raised a Muslim but was an atheist by the time he had married Obama's mother. Obama's step-father was also Muslim, but of an eclectic kind who could make room for animist and Hindu beliefs. Neither Obama nor his mother were ever atheists, but she raised him in a relatively secular household where he learned about religion.

A hard hitting research centric and well sourced argument that Obama is an Atheist/Deist:

I wouldn't accuse them of tap dancing but yeah it's interesting how one's environment can affect one's religious epiphanies

Frankly I don't want Indians to go too deep into the weeds of that type of identity politics but I guess when you're in a majority-western environment it's unavoidable to look at people from your community and wonder if they're being representative

Truth be told I think dude is pretty much an agnostic but will never admit it. Crazy how that's career suicide. Atheists and agnostics are some of the least likely people to ever get voted into office. And you can't even compartmentalize it and say some shyt like "look id like to keep my religious beliefs to myself, but here are some of the values that I support etc etc" I guess people still look to the religious beliefs of a candidate as a sort of proof of concept (:heh:) when it comes to core values. Sad, really.

The strange thing is it only became an issue recently, when "Christianity" became a general concept in politics. Even 50 years ago, and to a greater extent the more you go into the past, things weren't like this, because Catholics, Protestants, etc, were all still at each other's throats, so there actually wasn't Christian unity, and as a result, people actually cared less about the specific religious beliefs of the candidates, since they were seen more as individual beliefs. There were more Deists, atheists, etc, running for president back then with no challenges to their faith, because it was just an every person for themselves situation. The rise of the Christian Right is what brought Christian unity, and thus Christianity in general, into play as an unofficial requirement for candidates.

It all depends on what your perspective is. It's clear why they did it- they did so because it would help them accomplish their goals. Conversion to another religion, in the past, has been mandatory under a lot of circumstances. Essentially these guys are conservatives, but sadly enough realize that their own party is too ignorant to actually accept their cultural faith and names. That's kind of fukked up. I think it's a little kowtowy no matter how you slice it :yeshrug:

Over here, in the US, there simply aren't enough of us going around, so when the people who do rise to the top in politics are essentially neutering their identity as much as they can to make themselves look acceptable to the majority or a certain demographic, it pisses people off.

Even entertainers do it. Kal Penn, Mindy Kaling, its just wack as fukk to me.

:salute: to Aziz Ansari at least he's keeping it real

True. I actually used to be not very concerned with these ethnic/identity issues myself and considered myself pretty much myself my own person, but in a way all that means is that you're melding into the mainstream culture without seeing it as a cultural force of its own. I've mentioned this before but listening to some of the black civil rights speeches from the 60s helped me understand this kinda heritage/background issue
