That's bullshyt. Jack, Colby, and cheddar are always referred to by name, as is American, which aside from singles is also available in loaves at delis. So they gone slap some cottage cheese or muenster on my roast beef if i call American? They're also American cheeses but not "American cheese". Yal are arguing semantics

That's right. In older times cheddar was originally yellow-orangish color from grass fed cows (higher beta carotene) and was considered higher quality. Color was added to mimic and pass off as higher quality cheeses. Now many Americans associate cheddar (and other cheeses) as orange and annatto continues to be added to change the color
