Well it was a representative republic where people were nominated through democratic means .
Now we're a representative crumbling Republic where people are elected by oligarchs.
Edit: time out. Cottection . It always was oligarcial in nature. Read some of the writings of people like James Madison and Alexander Hamilton. They firmly believe not making it a one person one vote system and the system needs to be constructed in a way to ensure a populace is never able to interfere with the elites ability to rule the country to their liking. The image of freedom loving individualism loving founding fathers is fiction.
