After accumulating $277 million and counting from its earlier international release, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 finally opened domestically this weekend where it earned an estimated $92 million to top the box office.

While $30 million more than its 2012 predecessor made in its opening, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was nowhere near the openings of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man ($114.8 million) and Spider-Man 3 ($151.1 million). [Editor's note: Several folks have accurately pointed out that Amazing Spider-Man opened on a week day and had made $170 million before hitting the weekend. It made $62 million its first weekend in release.]

 Damn. They spent around 200 million on promotion. They will need to make around 700 million worldwide just to break even:pachaha:

Sub-$100M has to be a disappointment to Sony...and I don't think it's going to have staying power.

I don't think the May 9th releases will hurt it too much. It'll be interesting to see what Godzilla does on the 16th. There's a lot of hype and it looks awesome but it might be a situation where all the hype is online and has no correlation with real life

I'm glad I went into this movie thinkin it was complete trash like yall said but it wasn't that bad. I wouldn't watch it again but it was entertaining :yeshrug: still don't understand why they don't make a main storyline around venom and spiderman

Where are you getting these figures from?

The first Spider Man grossed $752 million worldwide, no way they spent $700 million on the sequel. The production budget was $200 million. And yeah they do grossly underreport their budgets but I still doubt they spent anywhere close to $700 million on this

Box office takes roughly 50 % of a movies gross...so if spider man made 92 million...the box office took roughly 46 million of that. Hollywood and the Box Office are two separate entities, Hollywood has to pay the box office to show films.

So let's say the movie itself cost 200 mil, and they spent another 200 mil on marketing, that means the movie has to make roughly 800 mil just for them to break even...

If Godzilla ends up being big then this movie might loose a ton of money...though I see they hedged their bets a little and got a 2 week head start on Godzilla...

I am sure that whatever the numbers are by the time X-Men comes out is what they will be...

I also doubt they really spent a total of 400 mil...especially Sony...they tend to do their movies as cheaply as possible

The studio estimated about 95 I think so it was off but still works for them because they're still killing it overseas. More and more, US markets matter less and less. That's how the first one made 752 million or something close to that because of the international markets. And I know Legacy and WB is betting on the international markets for Godzilla because I don't get a sense that the hype is that big here in the states as it is online. Snakes on a Plane syndrome indeed. Doesn't mean it will be bad lol just means that the internet is a bubble and often times the world outside of that bubble doesn't translate
