It's obvious that the people saying that comic book stores are dying don't actually go to comic book stores

That's what I'm realizing. Last time I went to Midtown Comics, it was a mad house and it's always a mad house. Can hardly get to anything because it's always crowded on both floors.

this depends. Comic book stores have been closing around the country for a while now. but whatever.

THIS can work simply because philly has a good base for comics. they have a 10 yr strong black comic convention and philly wizard comic con hasnt gone to complete. if she has strong independent and black publishing ties, along with the mainstream shyt, she could do aite.

It really depends of the geographic location of the store. There are a lot of people who still buy physical comics so they can add it to their collection. it may work out for her.

You cant go to what doesnt exist. its not a thriving business. the few that remain are novelty shops selling comics along side toys and collectables and crap and normally in the corner of some run down strip mall or flea market.

No, that's not true. Maybe it is where you live, but there are several comic book stores in my area, including a nationally known one that does a big convention every year. Comic book shops may have been closing with other forms of entertainment becoming more popular, but the business is far from dead, even with digital comics out there. A lot of stores, like the one in this thread, also do more than just sell comics, and have become "geek" spots so people with mulitple interests come in.

More people read regular books than comic books and those are shutting down everywhere too. I didnt say none can exist for now in niche markets. believe it or not there are still some movie and dvd rental businesses that still exist too. But as whole the industry is dying and on the way out.

i wish her the best.. but your a fool if you think a comic book store is a good investment in 2015. Thats like trying to convince someone to start a print newspaper or print magazine in 2015 just cause some of the big ones are still around. There is a reason why she is begging the public for 30k to open up her shop. Cause no smart money would invest in something that wont be around in 5 years.

In the last 13 years in my area, no comic stores have closed that I know of and at least two have opened. Maybe my city has a lot of comic book fans. I don't know how the Philly comic book market is, and maybe the overall comic book market is shrinking, but if her business fails, I think it will be for other factors that don't have to do with the overall market. She seems to be trying to diversify what her store does instead of just relying on comics.

I have a better idea. Why doesn't she create a 'rare comic book' marketplace where people can sell/auction off rare, collectible comic books and she can collect a commission from every sale/auction? She can also host competitive video game tournaments for money (my local comic book store has pokemon, tekken, street fighter, smash bros. tournaments).

If I had the money I would purchase the building across the street from her shop and do exactly this.

Most comic book stores do well by catering to the RPG lovers out there. They make bank selling supplies and shyt for fantasy RPGs and also hold tournaments and tutorials. So in addition to the comics they just add other geek shyt to what they offer.
That sounds like what this chick is looking to do.
Now I would need to know her exact location in New Kensington because her success is going to depend on attracting white nerds to her spot and if it the area is considered too hood she might be in trouble.
