Alright, let me break it down for you......

You know that "inner voice" in your head that you use to funnel your thoughts and hold inner monologues with?

Yeah, at one point, man did not know what that voice was....Modern man, schizophrenics, had become conscious and could not yet make sense of that voice and so they thought it was some other being dictating to them...."GOD"

That voice told them to do things that would benefit them instinctually. Hence, all of the gods that promoted fertility, farming, sun, etc

At some point, we became smart enough to realize that voice was just our subconscious dictating to us and that we could wield that voice..... Hence, full self-awareness......
