The Smith machine can become a detriment and a crutch to progress honestly. Especially if you're just starting out on your legs. A "weak" squat is imaginary IMO, some people do body weight squats strictly, its one of the best things you can be doing regardless of where you're starting because you're using a whole lot of your body to do it.

Start real light and work your way up in weight slowly with that barbell, practice form, form, form. You'll thank yourself later. Anybody that's there side eyeing you or "judging" instead of working aint about shyt and honestly isn't worth feeling any kind of way about.

I stopped doing squats all together and now use the leg press and the deadlift as my leg workout. Call me a ou55y but my back is more important. You fukk your back up and its goodbye to pretty much your life. Fukk that. Besides, deadlift is just as good as squat.

I think the potential to hurt your back is greater with the deadlift than squats.
You can move up in weight a bit faster with deadlifts than with squats. At least in my experience.

My first time doing deadlift I was able to do 245.

First time Free standing Squats was only 170

With that being said proper form and warm ups are key to avoiding injury.

yeah in the deadlift position people feel more powerful so are more likely to tack on weight that they can't handle.
if you just do the motion, the dead lift and squat look pretty much identical. major difference is where the weight is.

additionally a lot of them don't even drive into the ground with their feet they try to just pick it up using their upper body (back). At my gym it's pretty sad the form these guys display.

I feel you, thats why I always advise people against doing stiff leg deadlift, because more than likely, they're using excessive weight, which'll ultimately strain their back.

I still :smh: @ this cat stiff leg deadlifting 3 plates, than wondering why he had to get surgery on his back.

Back injuries from deadlifts could easily be avoided, if people simply bent their knees, and focused on lifting with the legs instead of their back.

I don't even know what an injury is :skip::umad:
