Where to even begin...
This anime is visceral, violent, and grotesque. The last anime I saw that was comparable was Elfen Lied. Prior to that, it was Amon: Apocolypse of Devilman. While those two anime were merely ultra violent, this has a surprising amount of sex for a non-hentai. The overly simplistic art style allowed them to get away with the combination of sex and violence. It's a lot like some of those crazy late 80s early 90s anime(Crying Freeman, Genocyber, Madbull) in that regard. The simple art style is good for some of the more trippy scenes, but the lack of detail in the drawings hurts a lot of other scenes. Compared to the first OVAs, Amon, and Cyborg 009 vs Devilman, the fights scenes were not as good. Notably, the Sirene fight scene has less action than the 1990 OVA but was...crazier.
This anime gives a lot of homage to the original comic, as well as spin off comics like Devilman Lady and Strang Days. It does a lot of things differently, and often better than the original comic. Despite the gore and sex, emotion is generally depicted in a much more meaningful way compared to previous Devilman anime/manga. Even though Go Nagai originally intended Devilman to be a narrative about War, this story has a lot of metaphors about puberty, sexuality and adulthood.
The problem is that anyone who hasn't read the original comic can easily be confused with what's happening. There are a lot of things that are not well explained, and the ambiguity isn't clever, it's just poor writing. I found myself explaining a lot of things to my girlfriend and her questions were all completely justified.
All the internet feminists will be happy to know that this anime passes the Bechdel test. However, I would only recommend this anime to someone who wants to see something violent, crazy and doesn't mind the art style. For those who want more, the Devilman Birth and Devilman Demon Bird OVAs are a good place to start.
