The problem isn't punchlines it's the set up and delivery also the changing of definitions for "punchline".
You've got dudes essentially saying Simile after Simile calling the sh1t a punchline, and that's not to say
you can't or shouldn't use simile's in a punchline, you should, just don't throw together a hundred weak punchlines
until one sticks, Wayne is probably the absolute worst example of a punchline rapper in 2012, mainly because
he uses that very tactic.
It'd be fine if all the wack ones were kept behind the scene and he just used the dope ones but that obviously isn't happening.

Anyways simile's are fair game, but if you just say you're LIKE something without setting it up, typically the punchline falls flat on it's face.
Dudes like Lupe ? Jay-Z ? Vakill ? Kendrick Lamar ? Wu dudes ? Immortal Technique ? Canibus ? Rass Kass ? Pharoahe Monch ? Joe Budden ? And many more that I can name but can't think of at the moment, the thing they have in common is they use the set up effectively, they get the punch ready, then hit you right in the ear with it.
They tend to *but not always* use metaphor, simile and word play all in one line, which is the boxing equivalent of throwing your body into a punch, it suddenly has more depth and weight, more skill, more finesse.
It's the reason I can still appreciate punchlines,a well thought out and delivered one will be dope after the hundredth listen, while a weaker one will play the background while you focus on the beat. lol.

Everyone in slaughterhouse is holdin it down as far as straight punch lines that are actually dope, same with dudes like Elzhi and Vakill.
The dudes in black hippy, Hopsin (got some nice punches !),and other cats that I just can't seem to recall at the moment.

They were all corny. Cassidy was the corniest rapper I've ever heard. Anybody can do punchlines, there's no creativity to it.

I slice your face like Chocolate cake
I tear you apart like Mr. Potato head
My guns stretch like limos

People were really impressed by this garbage.

all drake and them did was take out the "like" and hiphop heads called it brand new lol

I slice your face .....Chocolate cake
I tear you apart....Mr. Potato head
My guns stretch....limos

Slick lines here and there are still cool in a verse if it's a tool to advance or tell a story. Certain artists still do that well, most any elite artist can do that

But I personally feel like I outgrew Hip hop that's entirely about guns this size and cars that color and then the song goes off. What am I getting out of that

Yeah, and none of them could drop a cohesive album to save their lives.

its cool when people sprinkle some in when it makes sense but when cats try to make entire verses with nothing but that they usually end up having a lot of filler just to keep it going
