What Cody said in his new AON promo is what I was thinking CM Punk should have said the other day when I watched him have a light weight face of with Stone Cold in that 2k13 video. Stone Cold was asked to compare his Attitude Era and if he could survive in "CM Punk's Era." He answered like he should and sold his character as a legit threat. When they asked CM Punk, he kind of backed off and turned into the smarmy, "I'm in on it too guys, this isn't a real fight wink wink" thing that made the whole thing fall flat and nothing came from it. Stone Cold even tried a second time in the video and amped up, but Punk wasn't stepping it up at all.
I thought, man, this is time for CM Punk to shyt on the Attitude Era's three minute matches that ended in fukkery, the show getting a chihuahua and a mop over, teased incest, and using other Jerry Springer tactics to get ratings. CM Punk can point out how he's more agile and capable in the ring then they were, etc. etc. He didn't need bells and whistles to be "the best in the world." But he didn't say shyt because he was marking out on the low and it was like he didn't know how turn up if he can't rant about shyt that's "not part of the show." But somebody needs to step up and say something about this vaunted era.
Because in regards to Cody and them, their whole laid back, "this isn't real" and smark pandering shyt all came from CM Punk. This is the whole act that the Young Bucks and The Elite have been running with since he's been gone. They're all CM Punk's kids to be honest. They want to call out the mainstream and be rebels the who tell smark jokes. In a weird way the PIPEBOMB was just a spin on what Russo was trying to do decades ago by pulling back the curtain. The Elite have built a franchise on this cutesy inside joke thing, which is funny considering it's the main point people hate Russo for doing.
But watching this new video, at least Cody did step up correctly. He called out the Attitude Era and said it was great but also a lot of hot air. That's the stance he SHOULD take. He's in a new time and they need to do something new. BUT I can't help but feel like he's a big mark for himself and the fans are too, because he's essentially Kevin Nash in WCW right now. He is all buddy-buddy with the boss and ready to call all the shots when he's really not built for it. He's trying to stay on the modern smarks' good side by trashing the past and clowing on Vince Russo, but really, so far they've only been trying to do what he did. Let's not forget that in a short amount of time The Elite have done Attitude Era level fukkery and Russo's kayfabe breaking humor in shyt like
- had dikk Druids
- threw ludicrous "Superkick Parties" because they thought it was funny
- had crappy celebrity matches just to do it and get some publicity
- booked weird intergender shyt like how Russo was booking Chyna
- used crash and burn ring work to get over with the crowd instead of vignettes, which smells of desperation of a different kind
- use vignettes full of goofy shyt all day in their "Being the Elite" video shows
- pandered to smarks by saying "Hey don't you like the AKI wrestling games? Someone should bring them back"
- getting LJN figures lol
- basically selling shirts as a main gimmick, just like the Attitude Era and NWO did.
- do lots of gay shyt to troll. similar to Russo using T and A or gay jokes for a laugh
I get what AEW is trying to do, and I commend them for gunning for the top spot. But the fans can be idiots sometimes and they can't see what the hell is in front of their faces right now. AEW is trying to be the coolest guys in the room, but we're really watching a bunch of smarks in the ring doing goofy shyt and super work rate brags trying to get over with other smarks. I hope it succeeds, and with guys like Dustin, Arn and Malenko in the back they can put a pause on a lot of the CM Punk shyt their crew is known for doing. However, all this holier than thou attitude AEW marks have is tiring already and they need to chill. If you want to be better than the Attitude Era than you need to do better than them. It's that simple, and pretending like you're not trying to be as great as them because they weren't all that, is a foolish point to make. Cody is just talking to talk right now lol.
