Garcia, Peterson, Lee Make Weight; Quillin Heavy
By Jake Donovan
The recurring theme in the
Premier Boxing Champions series is that belts don’t matter. So far, making weight doesn’t seem to be a principle priority either.
Lamont Peterson avoided the embarrassment of missing weight, though even in
shaving his lengthy beard still had to strip down to his birthday suit in order to make his contracted weight for Saturday's headliner versus Danny Garcia at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Peterson made the contracted 143 lb. catchweight limit on the second try after initially weighing in 0.2 lbs. over the limit. Garcia came in at 142.2 lbs. for his second straight catchweight bout.
Unbeaten middleweight Peter Quillin became the latest PBC fighter to miss the contracted weight for a fight on the newly developed series. The former titlist showed up more than a pound heavy for Saturday’s showdown with Andy Lee. The contracted weight is the middleweight limit of 160 lbs.; Quillin, while ripped and in shape, registered at 161.4 lbs., while Lee came in under the limit at 159.6 lbs.
Under normal commission rules, Quillin will have up to two hours to shed the excess poundage, or else will be subject to a fine and the possibility of the bout being canceled.
Adrien Broner was believed to have been in a similar position when showing up heavy for his eventual 12-round win over John Molina Jr. last month in Las Vegas. It was determined on the spot that Broner was in the clear for weighing 141 lbs. for a scheduled 140 lbs. bout, since the normal terms of a non-title fight call for a +/- 1 lb. allowance, although that aspect wasn't made public until after Broner hit the scales.
