Beterbiev opponent? Not Hopkins, maybe Chilemba

When light heavyweight contender Artur Beterbiev, manager Al Haymon and promoter Yvon Michel decided this week to turn down an offer from Main Events for Beterbiev to challenge unified titleholder Sergey Kovalev on Nov. 28 in Moscow, they said it was so Beterbiev could gain more experience by fighting in a title eliminator that, with a win, would make him Kovalev’s mandatory challenger.

It was also because, as No. 1 contender, they could force Kovalev and Main Events to a purse bid and have the upper hand in winning the promotional rights to the fight because of all that Haymon investor money being thrown at his Premier Boxing Champions that would be at his disposal to win the bid.

So, in the meantime, Beterbiev accepted the position in the title eliminator and the IBF ordered him to face former champion Bernard Hopkins, who is coming off a one-sided decision loss to Kovalev in their unification fight last fall.

Hopkins, 50, wants one more major fight before he retires, not a brutally tough one against a rough, rugged, not well known, super dangerous Beterbiev.

Hopkins had until the close of business on Thursday to accept his spot in the eliminator but, according to the IBF, he did not respond. Therefore, Hopkins is out of contention for the fight, which he probably doesn’t care about anyway. He is seeking a title shot at super middleweight against Arthur Abraham.

So the IBF will go down its 175-pound rankings to find somebody willing to accept the eliminator against Beterbiev.

No. 1 is vacant -- that’s what the fight is for -- Beterbiev is No. 2 and Hopkins was No. 3. No. 4 Erik Skoglund is not available as he has another fight scheduled for Sept. 19. The IBF is down to Isaac Chilemba, another Main Events-promoted fighter.

The IBF said he has until Tuesday to respond. If he accepts it, Main Events and Michel will negotiate the fight, and if they can’t make a deal it will go to a purse bid. If Chilemba declines, the IBF will continue down its rankings until somebody accepts the eliminator with Beterbiev.

Chilemba is no lock to accept the fight because he another good option that he and his team must discuss. He is ranked No. 1 in the WBC rankings and is expected to be ordered to face No. 2 Andrzej Fonfara in that organization’s final eliminator for a shot at champion Adonis Stevenson.

:whoa:

I understand B-Hop turning this down....the man is a half century old and there is no need for him to be fighting a prime, hard punching Russian Demon who has no concern for your health. Especially since his last fight was against a prime, hard punching Russian Demon, and if he beats THIS Russian Demon, he has to fight THAT Russian Demon again:damn:

So they didn't need extra time to fight Bernard but do to fight kovalev?

Who really scared?

:jbhmm:

Well, they didnt call out B-Hop...he is just in the way. I dont think anything is wrong with being willing to face either Hopkins or Chilemba in a tune-up bout for this JDJ version of Kovalev, who Beterbiev would be facing as a mandatory after Chilemba (if he accepts) anyways:manny:

You gotta remember, the Beast only has 9 professional fights, and has only fought a grand total of 26 professional rounds:whoa:

Kovalev has 28 professional fights, and has 95 rounds of experience...plus he went 12 with B-Hop. Kovalev wouldnt have fought Beterbiev with only 9 professional fights under his belt, so asking for a 10th fight by Beterbiev shouldnt be looked down on imo:yeshrug:

Damn...my bad breh. I posted this response 3 hours ago, and apparently my computer didnt send it:dead:

Here it is:

1 fight....an IBF eliminator for Kovalev's IBF Championship, which would make Beterbiev the mandatory contender, plus give him a little more ring experience.:ehh:

Again breh, Kovalev has fought more professional fights, than Beterbiev has professional rounds...28 pro fights for Kovalev to 26 pro rounds for Beterbiev:yeshrug:

Its like you people live in bizarro world. In what situation does Bernard Hopkins not fight anyone, anywhere, for a belt? :pachaha:

I think this time bhop is finally realizing that his age is starting to limit him..that kovalev fight humbled him a little

Yep. No need for him to put his body/mind through that again as a 50 year old man.

Even more than that.i want bhop to retire completely..he’s 50 years old bhop went farther and was more competitive than he should have been at his age…bhop taking punches with murderous intentions from kovalev was not entertaining to me (I only bring it up when I need to troll @krackdagawd :lolbron:)..i feel moreso about it just reading about james toney losing a 10 round decision to a fukkign club fighter…bhop broke the mold but father time is undefeated..face a light touch and be done
