They ruined their franchise with Alien 3. Alien 4 felt like a stupid comedy. AVP had promises....Young predators killing aliens to prove their worth? OK something different, let's develop a story from there, but then they gave it to Paul W Anderson who couldn't do shyt with Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil, some of the easiest scripts to write. So you knew AVP was gonna be another mediocre film.

AVP2? One of the worst movies ever

Prometheus? Interesting new storyline with great visuals. Unfortunately stupid characters and many other movie mistakes. But it was a watchable film for sure.

Covenant? Comically stupid characters, like I'm watching infomercial "are you struggling slicing bread? We present you, the already sliced bread!" There are countless of videos on youtube laughing at how stupid that crew was.

To be honest.

Prometheus had the right idea but was always going to be held back as it was originally envisioned as an Alien Prequel when it should have just been it's own thing.

But the refusal to get away from ships, dark corridors, face huggers close ups has made the franchise creatively STERILE.

It’s like the Terminator franchise.

Event Horizon was not a good movie. It wash rushed with noticeably bad CGI in some places. Borrowing too many ideas from Alien and just a lazy writing in general.
In Event Horizon the crew is supposed to locate an abandoned ship somewhere in space and they don't know anything about the space. Lazy writing right there. That movie made no sense and it was mostly corny jump scares and some gore scenes.
Event Horizon isn't the best movie, but it's developed a cult following, and it's definitely enjoyable. It's solid cosmic horror, Shining in outer space type shyt

I enjoyed the movie:yeshrug:

I thought Laurence Fishburne was really good in it. I also liked Sam Neil.

I did an Alien franchise rewatch a few months after I watched it so you might be right there. Space horror is kinda hard to do without biting a bitting Alien or Space Odyssey. It's like almost all exorcism, or religious horror biting off The Exorcist. I could tell for example that Deep Star Six and Leviathan took a lot from Alien. Leviathan also took a lot from The Thing. Deep Rising also took a lot from Aliens.

The part where I do remember the cgi being bad is where they board the ship from theirs, so I agree there. I did enjoy the practical effects when they used them and the engine room.
Event Horizon is a personal classic in my family. That movie is watched at least twice a year

Event Horizon came out when the audience was starving for some Alien-like movie, so they were kind of forgiving to some of the movie errors. This was Paul W Anderson's attempt at making a horror film and he borrowed bunch of ideas from Alien and Doom and made a very rushed product.

So what you got is a pretty dull movie with unfinished storyline, some really stupid characters and too many cheesy scenes for a horror film that disrupts the movie tension. Especially with some of really bad CGI scenes that can make you laugh at how bad it looked.

The movie has a following because of "what if" since the movie was edited out removing some of the really gory scenes. They probably would have made the movie more unique looking. It leaves people guessing of what the actual film was supposed to look like.

If I want a movie that's not Alien franchise but has some of similarities to it, I'd just re-watch Pitch Black again. Vin Diesel nails the Riddikk role.

I'm not sure. The only late 80s deep sea movies I didn't watch was The Abyss and Lords of the Deep.

Which reminds me that I watched The Rift :snoop: The breh "Skeets" in that movie. Roles like that are why I enjoyed Laurence Fishburne in Event Horizon so much.

I think a mass invasion angle just takes away from what made the xeno so scary to begin with. Earth is just inherently was less scary of an atmosphere and vibe than a more enclosed area in a more hostile environment like space. And having a million enemies is way less scary. That's one of the few gripes some die hard fans had with Aliens, was that they made the aliens less scary by having more of them and having them killable with guns. AVP2 was not a mass invasion thing, but it was on earth and it was easily the worst movie out of both franchises. One of the worst movies ever made.

Keep it in space, for sure, I think.

We now know everything about the Alien.

It is pointless to have it barely featured, dimly lit, sneaking up on people and hiding in vents etc.

It's like the Raptors from Jurassic Park.

AVP2 was cheap and under-budgeted and just set in a small town. You could also barely see a thing.

They already made a comic where the Aliens takeover Earth, it was well received. So the blueprint is ALREADY there.

Just wanna say Sam Neill is the scream king of that Lovecraftian, cosmic shyt. 'Possession' is the best thing I've seen him in in that regard. He really takes a liking to those roles and I think he has one more mindfukk movie in him before he hangs it up. Maybe Del Toro or the director of The First Omen can hit him up and put homie to better usage than a lackluster Jurassic sequel.

I disagree with Sci Fi horror ending in the 80s.

If you want some more modern Sci fi horror I do recommend.

Event Horizon
In the Mouth of Madness
The Mist
Annihilation
Possessor
Underwater(This is pretty much Alien)
Upgrade (Often compared to RoboCop)
The Void( I thought it was alright but good use of practical effects)
Danny Boyle and Alex Garland's 'Sunshine', even if it managed to commit to slasher in a ridiculous manner during the last act. Fantastic atmosphere for a sci-fi overall. Stacked ass cast looking back. If it wasn't Fede, I wouldn't have minded them taking the reins from Ridley.
