2006 was different. You had the Islamic Courts Union and Al-Shabab was just one part of it. It fragmented after the Ethiopian invasion and Shabab were the ones that stayed in the country and to their credit were able to fight against the Ethiopians with the other broad Somali resistance.

But once the Ethiopians left and Al-Shabab were put in a position to actually govern, they didn't really help themselves outside of providing some services in south. I understand they are all about self-reliance and stuff, but they really didn't/don't have a plan of substance long term for SOMALIA and SOMALIS. Its all about global issues and freeing Jerusalem and stuff while our people stay in poverty. They also suffered a huge PR blow with the famine. Their capital punishment frequency also is way too high and they have abused the people into fear. You know Somalis don't stand for that shid and will rebel by any means necessary.

The fact that they have lost so much legitimacy and support is a sign that they are done. They'll truly be done if foreign forces were gone and the government actually creates a force where they can capture territory. If I was President, that would be my number one objection... creating a disciplined force that can not be matched inside Somalia's borders.
