African-American Day Parade marches through Harlem

Dubbed the “Largest Black Parade in America,” thousands came out for the 46th Annual African-American Day Parade on Sunday in Harlem.

The parade started at West 111th Street and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard and proceeded to West 136th Street. Black dignitaries and celebrities along with kings and queens of Black organizations were featured

Floats and marching bands came from 12 states including the Lincoln University Orange Crush Marching Band from Pennsylvania. This year’s parade honored the African-American business community.

The day kicked off with the 14th Annual African-American Day Parade Breakfast at Harlem Tavern. Speakers included Assemblyman Keith Wright, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Public Advocate Letitia James.

Grand marshals for the parade were Henry Carter of Wheelchair Charities restaurateur Melba Wilson, NAACP New York State Conference President Hazel Dukes, Tom Joyner, Pat Stevenson of the Harlem News Group, Clifford James of Unity Funeral Home, Robert Horsford of Apex Building Group and New York Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie.

A number of organizations are participated in this year’s parade including the National Action Network, the NAACP and the Urban League along with churches, labor unions, colleges, sororities and fraternities.
