Do you have a sense of whether the current Taliban force is made up of mostly Afghans, or foreign fighters?

The Taliban consist of local Afghans, Afghan refugees in Pakistan, Pakistani Pashtuns and foreign Islamic militants

Only the first would have any remote sense of Afghanness and even that would be marginal. These people are a mix of brainwashed Cannon fodder, die hard ideologies, criminals slash drug traffickers, occasional tribal elder whose riding because the tribe he beefs with rides with the Govt, opportunistic everyday Joe Shmoes and straight foreign intelligence (Pakistani, Iranian to a lesser degree) stooges

I was wondering the same thing, what would happen if AMISOM left. Difference in Somalia is significant parts of country got pretty entrenched regional rule, so don’t think we’d see a total collapse but Mogadishu would be at risk.

How come the Taliban managed to get a hold of the North which they never ruled ? Did they convert some Uzbeks or Tadjiks ?

How come the Taliban managed to get a hold of the North which they never ruled ? Did they convert some Uzbeks or Tadjiks ?

Three reasons (no order)

1) Northern Warlords got rich the last two decades. They're soft as fukk, and an entirely new generation is not really riding for these establishment leaders (remnants from the Jihad) like that

2)Talibs recruited non Pashtuns, and they use Central Asian militants in the North. They simultaneously entrenched themselves in the small Pashtun communities of the North while having their allies work the Tajiks and Uzbeks. They also may have gained some brownie points off a variety of little things that give them appeal (religious appeal, a perception they're less corrupt etc)

3) A not so insignificant amount of Afghans are cutting deals with the Taliban. This cannot be overemphasized. Some of it is reading the tea leaves, but some of it is brutal Afghan politics. Ghanis opponents are cutting deals to bring down this govt, force Ghanis resignation, and this will lead to the Taliban negotiating directly with real Afghan stakeholders (Jihadi and Ethnic leaders), those dudes want this western bullshyt out just as much as the Taliban. The only issue is that this approach is predicated on the intl community stopping a complete takeover of the country by the Taliban (or maybe they have such an understanding with the Taliban)

He didn’t have to think twice, he said hell no. That money ain’t worth the Shabab target :hubie:

The US Military taught those Afghan soldiers how to fight and they still lose to the Taliban so quickly?
