when floyd mayweather beat andre berto he said that most of these fighters dont have a pivot. he said a fighter must have a pivot. fighters like floyd mayweather, archie moore, and niccolino locche fight from a front foot pivot.
you have a front foot pivot whenever you have your body weight over your front foot. having your body weight over your front foot and using a front foot pivot gives you the ability to press down and push off of it to get away from any punch at any time. thats what makes fighters that fight from a front foot pivot hard to hit.
heres floyd leaning in from a front foot pivot and hanging out a few feeling out jabs
every jab doesnt have to be a bullet. by leaning in from a front foot pivot and feeling out with your jab you can read body language with it better and it gives you the ability to press down and push off of your pivot to bail out of your jab at any time and get out safely.
you can press down and push off of your pivot to bail out of your jab early.
or you can press down and push off of your pivot to bail out of your jab late.
when you are feeling out with your jab and you feel a right hand coming over it just press down and push off of your pivot and bail out of your jab safely.
and when you press down and push off of your pivot you can throw a check hook with it in the same motion.
An old head in the gym used to say that all the time when I first started but my dumbass just thought he was a old drunk and all I wanted to do was brawl! It wasnt until years later(and much to late
for me to even begin to fully and properly utilize it). that I finally understood the importance of that vital piece of footwork.
Thats one of the reasons you should always listen to what people got to say. Even someone you dont expect might be dropping pearls of wisdom!
push off of your back foot sliding your front foot forward with it. in the same motion transfer your body weight over to your front foot planting it down hard into the ground and braking your forward momentum. try doing this for a few reps just to get a feeling for it.
now try throwing your jab with it in one smooth motion.
now try pressing down and pushing off of your front foot and retracting your jab back to your body at the same time with it in one smooth motion.
in. out. in from your back foot extending your jab. out from your front foot retracting your jab. in. out. smooth.
this jab is hard to counter because of the way you can press down and push off of your front foot to move away from any punch. heres charley burley throwing a jab and pressing down and pushing off of his front foot to move away from a counter jab.
remember push off of your back foot when you are extending your jab and push off of your front foot when you are retracting your jab.
floyd pushes off of his back foot to transfer his body weight over to his front foot to jab but what makes floyd different from a lot of fighters is that he likes to hesitate before he throws it.
by hesitating he forces a fighter to have to guess when he is going to throw it. a lot of fighters get frozen by this because he may never even throw it. he may just show it to you to freeze you.
there are actually more punches integrated into this same motion. floyd doesnt just jab from it he throws lead right hands and lead left hooks from it too. every time floyd shows it to a fighter that fighter doesnt just have to get ready to worry about a jab. that fighter has to get ready to worry about lead right hands and lead left hooks that come from the same motion too. therefore every time floyd shows it to a fighter he is inherently feinting a jab, a lead right hand, and a lead left hook all at the same time.
when floyd gets on that front foot you always have to be ready for various punches to come out of it but floyd can just press down and push off of it at any time to move away from any punch or turn it into a pull counter in the same motion.
fighting floyd is like being in a torture chamber. every move you make you get punished for.
heres sergey kovalev pushing off of his back foot to transfer his body weight over to his front foot and jab in the same motion and then pushing off of his front foot to transfer his body weight back over to his back foot and move back from a counter right hand in the same motion.
when a fighter is trying to come over your jab with a right hand you can push off of your back foot and then push off of your front foot to get you in and out quick.
The way Sergey does it is much easier to follow then how floyd does it, because floyd is so goddamn slick with it. Once you get that front foot pushin you out as your jab retracts your golden. Props!!!
