The Sweet Science
:jbhmm:

Cool thread idea! Is this for you or a friend or just something you were contemplating?

I'll throw three bits of advice out

Read you contract or at least pay a lawyer to read your contract, also dont hire said lawyer for anything but reading that contract. Try and keep your deal short term so if the situation aint right you can
move on (unless your a scrub then get locked in for as long as possible:pachaha:)

Dont think because you made it to the "big leagues" you can cut corners with your training, just because your getting paid now doesnt mean you can take your foot off the gas! If anything you should be pushing down harder on the pedal!

Work the fukking body !!!

So what would your advice to the young fellow be?
Never forget the jab to the body

Always switch your defense up
In the pro game cats are experience and if you block/parry/slip a certain way too many times you'll be timed

Stay training even when your not in training camp
Stay running and shadow boxing (30 minutes) five days a week plus work on your footwork and head movement and then another 30 minutes on the jab(gotta perfect it)
Work on being defensively responsible
Workout the neck muscles(neck bridges) cause no matter how good your defense is you will get hit
Learn how to side step away from punches(a lost art today)
Research more about the business side and make the right moves
So much stuff about the sport and so much knowledge to give those wanting to turn pro
But most importantly

i think a lot of fighters forget to transfer body weight from leg to leg when they are slipping and just move the head out of the way.

when you are slipping a jab through the space that you have next to your right ear and over your right shoulder you should always remember to transfer your body weight over your front leg with it in the same motion.

7B1tCaU.gif

the motion you make to slip a jab through the space that you have next to your right ear and over your right shoulder is the same motion that you make to throw a right hand. you rotate your hips and in the same motion transfer your body weight over your front leg pressing down firmly on your front foot planting your front leg down hard into the ground. you dont have to try to move your head out of the way. the motion that you are making moves your head out of the way naturally.

that is why when you slip a jab through the space that you have next to your right ear and over your right shoulder you can throw a right hand with it in one smooth motion. the motion of the right hand is slipping it naturally.

thats how shane mosley knocked out miguel pena

or when you slip a jab through the space that you have next to your right ear and over your right shoulder and remember to transfer your body weight over your front leg with it in the same motion you can load that body weight into a left hook.

thats how roy jones knocked out jorge vaca

or you can use the same motion that you make to slip a jab through the space that you have next to your right ear and over your right shoulder to feint a lead right hand.

sergey kovalev is making jean pascal tentative to throw a jab and tentative to get hit by a lead right hand at the same time by using the same motion to counter and feint therefore forcing pascal to have to worry about more than one thing.

a lot of guys get hung out on the end of a jab and dont know what to do but just by remembering to transfer your body weight when you are slipping you turn one basic move into a swiss army knife that you can slip or punch or feint from.

If you're the one throwing that jab, is there a better way to avoid that counter right other than by bringing the jab hand quickly back to defense or by feinting the jab first(making it harder to time it with the counter)?

there are ways to make your jab hard to counter.

they have a move in the cuban system that they named el paso pendulo. you push off of your back foot to transfer your body weight over to your front foot and then you push off of your front foot to transfer your body weight back over to your back foot and then you repeat it like a pendulum.

heres teofilo stevenson doing it

you throw your jab with it in the same motion and therefore every time you do it you are inherently feinting a jab. it camouflages your jab and makes it hard to counter.

the advantage of pushing off of your back foot is that you can adjust just how hard you want to push off of it to change how long or short you want your jab. you can push off hard and throw long or you can push off weak and throw short.

uYLcUci.gif

you force a guy to guess what kind of jab you are going to throw, a long jab or a short jab, every time you push off of your back foot. when you throw a short jab it doesnt pass through slip space like a long jab and therefore you force a counter puncher to guess what he can counter and what he cant every time you push off of your back foot to throw a jab.

the advantage of pushing off of your front foot is that you can push off of it to suddenly move back and away from punches. it can be used to reset your body weight back over to your back foot to throw more long or short jabs and it can be used as a defensive move because it gives you the ability to bail out in a hurry.

heres sergey kovalev pushing off of his back foot to transfer his body weight over to his front foot and jab in the same motion and then pushing off of his front foot to transfer his body weight back over to his back foot and move back from a counter right hand in the same motion.

when a fighter is trying to come over your jab with a right hand you can push off of your back foot and then push off of your front foot to get you in and out quick.

or you can jab from a front foot pivot.

when floyd mayweather beat andre berto he said that most of these fighters dont have a pivot. he said a fighter must have a pivot. fighters like floyd mayweather, archie moore, and niccolino locche fight from a front foot pivot.

you have a front foot pivot whenever you have your body weight over your front foot. having your body weight over your front foot and using a front foot pivot gives you the ability to press down and push off of it to get away from any punch at any time. thats what makes fighters that fight from a front foot pivot hard to hit.

heres floyd leaning in from a front foot pivot and hanging out a few feeling out jabs

QcD9sOF.gif

every jab doesnt have to be a bullet. by leaning in from a front foot pivot and feeling out with your jab you can read body language with it better and it gives you the ability to press down and push off of your pivot to bail out of your jab at any time and get out safely.

you can press down and push off of your pivot to bail out of your jab early.

LCQLhad.gif

or you can press down and push off of your pivot to bail out of your jab late.

2vGIk0N.gif

when you are feeling out with your jab and you feel a right hand coming over it just press down and push off of your pivot and bail out of your jab safely.

and when you press down and push off of your pivot you can throw a check hook with it in the same motion.
