I know everyone here is a fan of hiphop, that said you are all more than likely familiar with at least a handful of "conscious" rappers. I realize this isn't a black and white subject, but i feel there's a lot of negativity in rap in general right now and it makes me feel a certain type of way. Everyone's familiar with the current trends guns, hoes, gold, molly, lambos..blahblahblah. As a rapper myself I would like to revamp a lot of my style to push more positivity, potentially even help people/brothers. But I''m at odds with that at the moment, because for me rapping is my main outlet for venting (ive been told my raps channel pure animosity-"in a good way"). My shyt isn't all guns, corpses, violent punchlines and weedsmoke but a FAIR amount of it is. Idunno I feel like if i change for the "greater good" I'm potentially taking away something i "need".

How do you guys on here that rap feel about your music as far as how it might affect some listeners? Do you care?

-just asking this shyts been eating me lately, seeing all the current problems in my community and the world at large. I'm not on some lupe/Chuck D shyt, but at the same time i kinda want to be now

There's way to address issues without looking "preachy" and yet still keep rapping about what you like. Your human you have more then just one view for certain things and issues. If music is your outlet for venting, then vent.

you can be a part of the negativity and feed off of that, or choose to hustle and be more about solutions, and make that what you live. thats really what you need to concern yourself with. anything thats false or misbegotten wont help anybody, including yourself

I feel this. I'm just so torn over this shyt (shyt i made a thread about it:/). That's the whole thing though, horrorcore is like my forte like i know i really do own just about everyone who does it, and when i try the "lupe" approach to things i can do it but it feels forced before i even finish the 16. Like i've always been into edgar poe, lovecraft, clive barker and shyt and musicwise i've been into shyt like playa fly, skinny pimp, tinimaine, lord infamous since i was like 15. I know i can't force myself to rap a certain way, i just dont wanna contribute to this current madness. idunno i guess i need to give it more thought :snoop:

you know the gravediggaz put knowledge inside of their horrorcore raps.

the most important thing I feel is that you have to write what you feel most comfortable with. you cant tell gucci to write "I can" and you cant make talib become a trap rapper. you got to go for what you know

Hip Hop is about being true to yourself. In any musical artform you have to just do you. If you try to be something you're not you're gonna end up in trouble, and you're gonna fall short.

So I'm watching ESPN 30 for 30 last night which discussed professional athletes fron the 90's and 00's going broke...and the "younger, hip hop influenced" athletes openly admitted that hip hop songs like "bling bling" and "make it rain" played a significant role in influencing them to spend hundreds of thousands and even millions in jewely and blow cash on strippers (as opposed to the non-hip hop athletes who at least blew money on bad business investments). That being said this is just further proof that hip hop does have a significant influence on listeners....

I don't think violence in music is a problem at all. Violence is natural, everyone understands violence and can put it into context: hurting people is bad. Violence and dark imagery can be used to connect with people and get your ideas across.

But like dude said above, the most negative messages in hip hop are the ones we consider "fun". "I got your wife, she's dykin, Louis luggage, on molly, Lambo outside, you broke nikkas still ride the bus, I'm rich off cocaine blah blah blah"

Don't get me wrong that shyt is fun to listen to..sometimes. But when the entire genre is based on that bullshyt you realize that at best you are just wasting everyone's time and at worst poisoning people's minds.

You're asking but you already know what you SHOULD do. Give everything you have to the poor. If thay was over anyone's head: we should all be saying and doing as much as we can to help everyone and we all know it. Being "torn" about it is the lazy side who only wants to sit back and eat and not worry about his duty. It's a good place to be spiritually. The earliest phase is almost all selfish. The ohase you're in now OP is about 50 50. One day maybe the dutiful part will win over the lazy part and you'll stop the bullshyt.

for every "Bling Bling" & "Make It Rain", theres a "Get By" & "Come Close"..

cats just never speak on, or media never portrays the balance in hip-hop.. thats more the issue, than anything.. of course it looks negative, if thats all thats being really portrayed..

in closing.. alot of them athletes you're talking about just lacked basic money-management skills.. has nothing to do with "non hip-hop".. hell.. alot of people lack money-management skills.. they just dont have it to blow like them athletes do/did..
