they weren't getting athletic scholarships (that's limited by the ncaa and you can't be wasting them on bums), they were classified as recruited athletes, most likely preferred walk-ons so that their admissions application would be viewed through those athlete lens (easier).They were paying the college coaches to say their kids were being considered as athletes so they could get scholarships/get in to the school
