ok, i dont think some of yall are actually differentiating between playing the same character (being typecast) and playing different characters the same way (having little range).
for example, Johnathan Statham plays the ex-marine/agent now hired gunman/rouge in a whole lotta movies. its basically the same character just placed in different scenario's.
As for Nicholas Cage, he has actually played a large number of very diverse characters, gambler, wizard, cop, convict, angel, parent, gangster, drug dealer, paramedic, soldier, teacher, he just doesn't play them well because he isn't that good of an actor, so they all end up basically the same.
truth is just about every action star will play the same character in most of their movies and every comedian will play different characters but in the same way. to be honest, there aren't that many actors/actresses who really have much range anyway. it would be easier to just list the ones who do because its really only a handful of versatile actors/actresses out there.
also, just because an actor is typecast doesn't mean they cant do anything else, cause Forest Whitaker played the weird slightly schitzo alcoholic with not much going on in life for a long time, but he is actually a very good actor and has displayed range when given the chance.
or maybe im just trippin and going to deep into all this
