I'm of the opinion that it is great news ...
We need to discuss how Bungie has God tier lawyers.
Negotiated a deal to buy themselves back from Microsoft, and didn't get their talent roster completely gutted, leaving Microsoft to build a new studio to work on Halo going forward.
Left a teaser for Destiny in their last Halo project.
Above point means they may have started early work on Destiny while at minimum getting paid by Microsoft for their final Halo projects.
Got out of the Activision deal early, AND kept the Destiny IP/publishing rights
Secured funding for, and began early development for their next non Activision project while still working under the Activision deal.
It's not often you see Activision essentially get finessed with no getback.

Hopefully, D3 will be everything right with 1 and 2, with no corporate bullshyt and greed to fukk it up.
Also, this is GREAT news for Destiny. A lot of the issues with the game were driven by shytty business decisions from Activision. Forsaken didn't bring people back they way they expected because for severely lapsed players who didn't even own the expansion pass for the original game (which was a VERY significant portion of the base they were hoping to get back with Forsaken) were told they needed to buy the first expansion pass, Forsaken, AND the new expansion pass. That's a huge roadblock, since you're asking people that haven't played this game in a year to invest damn near 150 to jump back in. That's the type of decision a publisher makes, not the dev.
There are plenty of other publisher driven issues with Destiny, but that's the most recent egregious example. It was a bad deal, and thankfully they got out of it so they might have a little more flexibility with how the game is handled.

Friend just pointed out that Activision is publicly traded - and how that was directly in conflict with how a studio the size of Bungie devs games 
that actually makes a ton of sense... if they're pushed and pulled to have certain content out quarterly to meet changing demands then yeah - kinda explains a lot actually
