Warren looking to impress home crowd in first 118-pound title defense

Feb 03, 2017 By Lem Satterfield

Warren (14-1, 4 KOs) will put his world championship on the line against mandatory challenger Zhanat Zhakiyanov (26-1, 18 KOs) on February 10 at the Huntington Center in Toledo, Ohio, just 200 miles from his lifelong hometown of Cincinnati.

The 118-pound title bout is the co-main event to Toledo native Robert Easter Jr.’s 135-pound title defense against Luis Cruz (Bounce TV, 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT), and comes just three days before Warren’s 30th birthday.

Rau'shee Warren, the only boxer to represent the United States in three Olympics, says defending his crown at home alongside Easter will be a surreal experience. It will mark just the second time Warren has fought professionally in his home state; the first was a victory over Jose Luis Araiza in Cincinnati in September 2014.

“As amateurs, me and Robert dreamed about fighting as professional champions on the same card,” Warren says. “And now all of Ohio is coming out to see us.”

To prepare for Zhakiyanov, Warren returned to Barry Hunter’s Headbangers Gym in Washington, D.C., for his second straight training camp. The 5-foot-4½ champion also prepped there last year for his title rematch against fellow southpaw Juan Carlos Payano.

After losing a split decision to the Dominican champion in a rough fight in Winter Park, Florida, in August 2015, Warren took the title from Payano by majority decision in Chicago in June.

During preparations last May for the Payano rematch, Warren was able to spar for two days with powerful southpaw Gervonta “Tank” Davis, who has since gone on to win his own world championship at 130 pounds with a knockout of Jose Pedraza in January.

With Easter already having been crowned 135-pound champion in September with a split decision over Richard Commey in an action-packed bout in Reading, Pennsylvania, Warren says he has drawn added inspiration from his fellow titleholders heading into his own defense.

“Watching Robert and Tank become champions was motivational,” Warren says. “I’m ready to defend my title with the hunger of a challenger.”

“Since I got here in December, it’s been champions building up champions in the gym,” Warren says. “We’re going hard, pushing and motivating each other. You’ll see the results on both cards on February 10 and February 18.

“I’ve been weighing out at 120 or 121 every day, so I’m just sharpening up my craft so I’ll be really strong come fight time.”

Zhakiyanov, 33, has competed in 11 countries over his 9½-year pro career, but he will be fighting in the United States for the first time.

The Kazakhstan native last fought in November 2015, when he earned a 12-round split decision over Yonfrez Parejo in Monaco, ending Zhakiyanov’s run of 12 straight knockouts.

Warren insists he already knows what he'll be dealing with come fight night.

“One round of one of his fights was all that I needed to see,” Warren says. “He comes straightforward trying to walk you down.

“He’s a mandatory, so I won’t overlook him. I respect everybody, but I see myself giving angles, wearing him down and beating him easily—especially in Ohio.”

Gausha has picked up six victories in the last two years against increasingly experienced competition including triumphs over Orlando Lora and Steven Martinez in 2016. He looks to continue his march towards a world title when he takes on the Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico-native Hernandez who won five times in 2016.

Here is what the fighters had to say Wednesday:

ROBERT EASTER

"As everyone knows, I don't like doing too much talking. I like to do my talking in the ring with these hands. February 10 is going to be an exciting night with a tremendous undercard filled with local talent.

"These guys up here and on this card are people I've grown up with. It means a lot for me to share the stage with them. I'm excited for them.

"I'm so grateful for all of the support I've received from fans here in Toledo. You keep me going forward and you keep me motivated.

easter-cruz%20(2)_1.jpg

"My dad and I have come a long way. It's been a long road and we're finally here, on top. I couldn't have done this without him.

"Toledo has been showing up like crazy for my last two fights so it's got me feeling very comfortable and confident.

"I have a very tough fighter in front of me. Cruz is going to come to fight and put on a show, but I'm prepared to deliver a knockout.

"I can't wait to get into the ring for this fight. This is something I've been waiting on for years. I'm a world champion just like I knew I always would be.

"Having Adrien Broner here means a lot. He is a big brother to me. He showed me the ropes and he's somebody I always looked up to.

"Being able to bring this title back home to Toledo is really exciting. I hope you all are as excited as I am, because on February 10 you're going to see fireworks. It's going to be short."

LUIS CRUZ

"I'm very thankful to everyone who helped me earn this opportunity. I've been training really hard and I'm planning on taking full advantage of this.

"I hope that all the people who come out on Friday are ready to see a great fight. I'm going to leave it all in the ring.

"I know that everything is up against me going to his hometown, but it is my dream to fight for a world title and I will give it everything I have."

RAU'SHEE WARREN

"This is a very important fight for me. I'm a world champion but I have a lot more work to do. I'm looking to grab more titles.

"My first obstacle is taking care of this mandatory. After I get him out of the way I'll be ready put my titles up against other champions.

"I have to be sharp in this fight. I have to stick with my game plan because this guy is coming to take my title.

"My opponent is a pressure fighter. He's trying to come forward. With the abilities that I have, I'm going to try to make it look easy."

ADRIEN BRONER, Former-Four Division World Champion

"I have on my promoter hat today for my first major card and I'm really excited about it. Being able to promote a card like this with two world championship fights is amazing, especially because of the fighters on this card.

"These fighters are guys that I've been in the gym sacrificing with. These guys came from water and cornflakes just like I did. It's going to be a real surreal moment seeing them up in that ring.

"I could tell stories about me, Robert and Rau'shee all day. Now we're all on the same stage as champions, representing this sport. I'm excited to give the fans of Toledo a great show."

Easter: I Showed I Have a Hell of a Chin, Can Get My Hands Dirty
By Keith Idec

Richard Commey was undefeated and had knocked out 92 percent of his opponents prior to his fight against Robert Easter Jr.

That didn’t prevent Easter from exchanging regularly with Commey in what emerged as the most impressive performance of Easter’s four-year pro boxing career. Easter’s right glove touched the canvas after absorbing a right hand by Commey in the eighth round, but Easter bounced back from that point deduction and continued trading with Commey on his way to winning a split decision September 9 in Reading, Pennsylvania.

“I showed that I have endurance and I have a hell of a chin,” Easter told BoxingScene.com. “People didn’t really think I could fight like that, brawl and get my hands dirty. They were thinking I was maybe a six-round fighter and I couldn’t fight all the way through. But when the pressure came, you see I didn’t give up.”

easter-cruz%20(1)_1.jpg

The 26-year-old Easter (18-0, 14 KOs) will make the first defense of the IBF lightweight title he won against Commey on Friday night in Easter’s hometown of Toledo, Ohio.

The heavily favored Easter will oppose Puerto Rico’s Luis Cruz (22-4-1, 16 KOs) in the 12-round main event at Huntington Center (Bounce TV; 9 p.m. ET). The defending champion’s confidence is understandably high following his win over Ghana’s Commey (24-2, 22 KOs).

“Commey was a tough test,” said Easter, who buckled Commey’s knees with a right hand early in the 12th round. “He’s an awkward fighter. He came to bring his ‘A’ game. Both of us didn’t wanna lose and, you know, it just showed I have pure heart and I’m a true winner. I fight all the way till the end. In all my fights, I prepare for the worst. Either I’m gonna get you out early, or we’re gonna go all the way through and I’m not gonna stop punching.” Easter knew all along that’s how he would perform once he faced a dangerous opponent in a high-stakes fight.

“I knew I had it in me,” Easter said. “In these training camps, we prepare for the worst. We prepare for anything. So if fights like that come about, I will be all the way ready, ready to fight till the end and will come out victorious.”
