Broner: I Weighed 144 This Morning; I Could Weigh In Tomorrow

Adrien Broner doesn’t have to make weight for his fight against Mikey Garcia until next Friday afternoon.

Broner said Thursday, though, that training has gone so well he could make 140 pounds this Friday if it were necessary.

“I feel great,” Broner said during a conference call Thursday. “I weighed in at 144 this morning and I could make weight tomorrow if I wanted to. But I’m just cruising, man. I’m just ready to put on a show.”

Broner’s ability to make the 140-pound limit for their fight July 29 at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center was such a concern for Garcia (36-0, 30 KOs), a clause was inserted into their contracts that would penalize Broner $500,000 if he doesn’t make weight in eight days.

“It’s actually been easy,” said Broner, who’ll turn 28 the day of the weigh-in. “I could’ve been did it, but I didn’t have the reason to do it. Now I’ve got a reason to make 140. Plus, I ain’t giving nobody a half-a-million. I’d rather give a n*gga $10. I mean, I’d rather give somebody $10. I’m not giving nobody half-a-million for nothing.”

The Cincinnati native’s last fight, a 10-round, split-decision victory over former sparring partner Adrian Granados, was contested at the welterweight limit of 147 pounds. That February 18 bout in Cincinnati initially was contracted for 142 pounds, but Broner gave Granados a take-it-or-leave-it offer to change the weight limit while they were training.

Broner (33-2, 24 KOs, 1 NC) also missed weight for his previous fight, a ninth-round stoppage of England’s Ashley Theophane 15 months ago in Washington, D.C. The former four-division champion weighed in at 140½ pounds for that fight and surrendered his WBA super lightweight title at the scale.

Garcia, 29, is having an even easier time making weight for this Showtime Championship Boxing main event. The WBC lightweight champion will fight at 140 pounds for just the second time in his career.



“Camp has been great,” Garcia said during the conference call. “As far as the weight, that’s never been a problem. It’s just training hard, getting in shape. That’s the No. 1 thing. The weight, like I said, is not a problem. So I didn’t go in worrying about the weight.

“We just actually are eating a little bit more than usual to keep the weight higher because I would’ve dropped the weight too soon. We’re sparring big guys and we didn’t wanna do that. That’s not the correct thing to do, so I feel very comfortable right now.”

Real Talk, the Ponce De Leon fight was closer and truly could have gone either way, and that was a step up fight. Not everyone dominates or blows their 1st step up outta the water though so it shouldn't be held against Broner that much.

Nah ponce was nice. Salido not on his level.ponce didn't need to low blow hots way to victory and he never missed weight on purpose. Ponce at 21 is a harder fight than salido. Salido not nice at all to me. He just a tough ass dirty fighter

Mikey Garcia was surprised by how friendly Adrien Broner was toward him last month during the press conference in Manhattan to officially announce their fight.

Broner was much more ornery Thursday when the fighters participated in a conference call to promote their 12-round, 140-pound showdown July 29 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn (Showtime). The former four-division champion said, “F*** the press,’ and talked three times about wanting to hang up during a question-and-answer session with reporters.

“My main focus is just getting in the best shape I can so I can go f*** Mikey up,” Broner said. “And that’s it. It’s nothing personal. It’s the hurt business and I know he’s definitely trying to come hurt me. But I’m coming to f*** him up and I ain’t with all the bullsh*t. I’m really ready to get off this motherf***ing phone, for real. I feel like we’re too close right now and I feel like punching him in his f***ing face. But hurry up with y’all questions. I’m ready to hang up on y’all.”

The 29-year-old Garcia (36-0, 30 KOs), of Oxnard, California, is nearly a 3-1 favorite over Broner, even though Garcia, the WBC lightweight champion, is moving up from 135 pounds to 140 for their fight. Cincinnati’s Broner (33-0, 24 KOs, 1 NC) is moving down from 147 pounds to 140 to box Garcia, but he has competed at or around 140 pounds for most of the past three years.

Garcia is just happy Broner has taken training for their fight seriously and is in fight mode with a little less than a week to go before they square off.

“That’s great,” Garcia said. “That just means it’s gonna be a better fight. I don’t wanna have a fight against an unfocused, untrained, out-of-shape Adrien Broner. That takes away all the credit. He seems to be ready to get in the ring now. And that’s actually – I love that because when we were at the press conference, he was being a little too friendly and we ain’t friends. We’re definitely not friends on Saturday night, the 29th, so that’s exactly the Adrien Broner I wanna hear.”
