NAAZIM RICHARDSON BREAKS DOWN BRONER VS. GARCIA; EXPLAINS WHY IT'S A "BIG MISTAKE" TO COUNT BRONER OUT
By Percy Crawford | July 04, 2017
PC: A lot of people are giving Adrien Broner little to no chance of defeating Mikey Garcia. You have known Adrien for a long time. Is it a mistake for people to count him out?
NR: That is a big mistake. If Adrien brings his subtle movements laterally that he used to use where he's just not there for return, Mikey got problems. It ain't like Broner's not one of the top fighters out there. Damn what you think about him outside of the ring. What Broner realizes is that he can change up and shock everybody in this fight and it makes that Maidana shyt look to be a long time ago. It would make that shyt look like it was way in the past. But Mikey is the truth and we believe Broner is the truth, but the thing is Mikey proves it consistently that he's the truth. Broner has proven it, but he has gotten away from it, so that's the interest of the fight.
PC: So you feel Broner bringing movement back is the key in this fight?
NR: Yeah, if Adrien Broner bring that movement and his hand speed, it's a pick 'em fight. And Broner ain't no tiny dude. He got a little power behind him. You can sleep on him if you want to, but it's like him walking out there and I ain't seen nobody else just crack [Shawn] Porter like that and sit him down. It's not like he had beaten Porter up throughout the fight; he walked out at the end of the fight and hit that dude with a single shot.
PC: In your opinion, do you feel Broner could make 140 pounds and be affective at the weight still?
NR: He can make it. It's about when he started working towards it. Broner has most of the answers to the questions people are asking. We pretty much know what we got with Mikey. But my thing too, like we just got done talking about, Mikey is talking about stepping on the gas and really pressuring Broner. Now that can backfire on Mikey. You go pressuring Broner and Broner is 100% and Mikey could run into something. He can run into a couple of things. What's the date on that one?
PC: July 29th!
NR: Oh, okay, July.
PC: You don't make it out to many fights, do you?
NR: There are some stuff that I'm looking at that I might dip out to. Usually I go try and support them young puppies. I think Broner and them going to be at the Barclays.
PC: Yes, that's where it's at.
NR: It's at the Barclays. I might have to dip my head in on that one.
PC: Broner is another guy that you have been knowing since he was a little pup.
NR: He was a pain in the ass (laughing). I gotta laugh because you gotta love him. Broner is like a kid out of my family. You know he was bad as hell, but he's one of yours (laughing). That little joker would come in my room talking about, "I'm running with the Philly kids." I say, "Man listen, why you wanna roll with us?" "I'm just hanging out with y'all." We be at the Silver Gloves and that little rascal, I say, "Hey Twin, why don't you behave yourself?" He was always doing something. That's why I'm always proud of them kids when I see kids like Broner, Gary Russell and Eric Hunter in the ring. I'm just happy to see them in the ring (laughing); Dirrell was another one. Well, Dirrell was different; Broner, Gary Russell and Eric Hunter were bad kids (laughing). Dirrell was mischievous (laughing). Everything Dirrell did had a comedic side to it, but he was mischievous. I used to call the Dirrell Brothers the Animaniacs. Anthony, Andre, and they had another brother. I would say, "Oh Lord, here comes the Animaniacs." They would be all over the place. Some of these kids like that, you just happy to see them in the ring because with that kind of edge, you can turn into anything out there.
PC: That's funny because "Outlaw" [Eric Hunter] is in camp with Broner right now. He was texting me the other day.
NR: Yeah...that lil' joker. Man, listen, that's a talented little rat right there. He just gotta get his head in the right direction. He still carry that street bravado. He just got so much of that street residue on him. He gotta shake that and move into the business of understanding he's a professional athlete. Your conduct must be that of a professional. It ain't selling out or crossing over; it's just understanding that you're a business. You are a franchise within yourself. Your brand is your name and you're going to interact with these other businesses and you have to conduct yourself that way because talent-wise, that little joker can fight. I just think mentally, they got him out of his game when they took him overseas. That Shelby kid was on him and then the ref was frustrating him.
PC: Yeah, I spoke with him afterwards and he felt like the deck was stacked against him and "Outlaw" is a guy that carries that load heavy.
NR: And maybe the deck was, but he had to be prepared for that. He had to deal with that. Maybe the deck was stacked against him, but it's like the guy that says, "Hey man, they keep throwing stones at my window." Yeah, they are. "But look, they keep throwing stones at my window." Yes, they are, they are throwing stones at your house. We are past that now. Now what are we going to do about the stones being thrown, instead of just hooting and hollering about the injustice of the stones being thrown? It's like I used to say years ago; we used to have a lot of black leaders, and every time I heard people speak, they spoke of the problems in the black communities, like when El-Shabazz used to speak, but you hear Malcolm X speak about solutions. He would speak of the problems, but then he would speak about this is what we have to do to deal with this shyt. And I always favored that because some guys run around and it's like they doing this and they doing that, okay, what are we going to do about it? You can't just keep talking about what's being done wrong. "Y'all not treating us fair. We don't have jobs." Okay, what are you going to do about it? "I want them to stop treating me unfair." Well, they are not going to change. They doing the thing that they do and this is the way that they do it, so now you need to adjust. Don't come back to the corner and say, "Hey man, this guy keeps punching me in my face." You think? People in boxing gotta look at both sides of the spectrum. People talk about Ward straying low, but I kept seeing Kovalev touch this guy in the back of his head. I was like, "Yo, he punch too hard for that shyt." He punch way too hard for that shyt. It don't take a lot of power to ruin a joker hitting him back there.
PC: No, not at all. That's the danger zone.
NR: Without a doubt. But no, Perc, when I see Broner in that ring, Gary Russell in that ring, and Eric Hunter in that ring, it makes me happy, man, because a lot of people don't realize, just like these guys use their talents to become professional boxers and KD [Kevin Durant] picked up that basketball and became a professional basketball player, for some of these guys, the streets is their talent. Getting on that one knee and shooting dice is their talent. Beating guys up for the neighborhood superstar is their talent. So to see these guys channel that edge and become professional athletes, that makes me proud of them because they were rough little jokers (laughing).
