My favorite song off this joint is, and has been since my first listen, The Door

I don't know why but I just love the whistling on that joint, think I've been whistling it to myself every day since the album dropped lol

The vocals on that joint are so nice, lyrics, melodies, everything

Don't knock yourself out that door :wow:

Can't wait for the next album

This has probably been my most played song on this album too.

BTW, if you haven't heard the version of this on D'Angelo's spotify sessions I'd advise you to check it out. It's even better IMO.

YES!! The Door is so under-appreciated. I don’t see a lot of talk about that one. When the album first dropped it was probably my most played song. I just loved the subtle nature and the laid back, melodic/sing along vibe of that cut. The Al Green influence is the icing on the cake as well.

I was so happy he performed this for the Spotify Sessions since he never really does it live. And what interested me and caught my attention was the 2nd verse he added as well. It makes me wonder if there is an extended version of The Door out there that has yet to be released? I dunno if you guys follow Russ Elevado on twitter, but I know he has mentioned some time back that there were some extended versions of a few songs from the album.

Another Life is ultimately my favorite song on the album, and the one that holds a special place in my heart. The lyricism hits close to home for me, and D’s musicianship shines as well. He’s always been a master at the keys which shows all over the song, but he also did his thing with the sitar as well. His guitar playing all over the album is awesome. I am really looking forward to seeing how much he continues to grow in that aspect of his artistry. I also want to give a shoutout to the “call and response” D does with his vocals towards the end of the song. It was like he was “taking it to church”, similar to what he did towards the end of Untitled (How Does It Feel). I just love the emotion in his voice. I wish there were more genuine love songs out there today similar to Another Life.

I dunno, but it’s amazing how it feels like the very first time when playing his music. It always sounds fresh. Brown Sugar and Voodoo have both aged gracefully, and Black Messiah is following in both of their footsteps. :mjcry:
