I have been thinking of something lately and I think the people who said they were D'Angelo fans during the Brown Sugar and Voodoo runs must be blocking out memories or forgetting when they claim they don't like Black Messiah because they can't understand anything he is saying. I mean I made a comment in here its hard at some points to understand him but they are saying they hate the album for that reason itself...

But anyway wht im saying is I was just going through listening to Brown Sugar and Voodoo and these critics are definitely lying......there are tons of songs throughout those besides main singles like "Crusin" and "Brown Sugar" where you also could say you dont understand him. So I dont know where these lies are coming from. Next time you hear one of these people say this ask them to quote a line from Voodoo or Brown Sugar and you will get a blank response...

Only thing they could say are the singles and when he did "Nothing Even Matters" with Lauryn. But he always did the hard to understand voice. These are the fans that masturbated to the How Does It Feel video and didnt listen to the rest of the album and are claiming they like the last album better because he could be understood better...

D'Angelo has always been unintelligible. and that's coming from someone who loved some of his earlier records.

When you're singing 'sweet nothings' it kinda doesn't matter if the lyrics are unintelligible. Because it's more about the vibe. And all music is vibe over lyrics anyway.

But when you're being political and have something urgent to say, we gotta be able to make out what you're saying. Especially if that's the main 'sell' of the record and not the strength of the vibe. If the vibe's mediocre, AND on top of that I can't hear all this supposed deep shyt you're saying, what's the point?

fixed.

I don't hate Black Messiah. I don't think it's trash or anything like that. It's just not for me. I bumped it twice and let the Recycle Bin give it a listen. I'm not a big D'Angelo fan to begin with.

It's certainly true that D'Angelo's music has always been somewhat unintelligible. 'Higher' of the Brown Sugar joint is one of my favourite songs, took me ages to figure out wtf the hook was saying. I was like is it ride our love in the storm? write our love with a storm?
Turns out this mumbling ass nikka D was saying write our love in the stone :heh: and that's actually pretty easy to understand compared to his other stuff.

Doesn't bother me much though, as my tastes are changing. The older I get, the more emphasis I place on musical aesthetics. I used to listen obsessively to Nas and Dylan (though I think he's a but overrated lyrically, but that's another matter), but I haven't listened to them in ages, i'm just not that interested anymore. I mostly listen to instrumental music and to me D'angelo's voice is a musical instrument unto itself, a bit like listening to my bloody valentine. And on that level alone this is a masterpiece to me:yeshrug:

The lyrics are simply an extra layer to be caught later. I'd advise you to stick with it, it's very rewarding.

Was on a prince fansite reading their reaction to this album.
Some cats are legit tone deaf or the biggest haters around.
Some doofus said this sounds just like Voodo :dead:

I can't just can't with some people :snoop:

That's why these lyrical miracle spiritual lyricism cats make me laugh. I can imagine their 14 year old selves typing behind the keyboard about how people are too stupid to get the (smart-dumb) rhymes, lmao. I used to analyze multis, metaphors and all that irrelevant shyt when I was 14.

Now I'm 31. I pay attention to depth in the musical aesthetics. What's meaningful. A meaningful song can have minimal lyrics and a repetitive melody, but be deep as fukk because it moves you at your core.

That's what mature music is really about. Not the pseudo-deep bullshyt.

finally listened to the album and it's aight...the beats and vibe are cool, his vocals were too low on most of the songs and got drowned out by the instrumentals, and he mumbled more than he usually does.....i'm give it a couple more spins cause i'm seeing him in concert soon and see if my feelings change about it....as of right now though: it's just aight to me and isnt anywhere near 'voodoo' nor 'brown sugar'...

Brown Sugar is for me a strong 8/10, Voodoo 10/10 and Black Messiah somewhere between a strong 8 and a weak 9.

My favourites right now from the BM album: The Charade, Betray My Love and Another Life. First time I heard Another Life I thought it was the greatest closing track ever, it just shivered down my whole spine when he screams at the end of the song. I'll pray for another album not coming too late, he's in his 40s now...
