I sat with the album most of yesterday. Love it. If you followed Q-Tip's production efforts over the past few years, this slides nicely in alongside a lot of that - from the use of melody, to the drums. Like I could easily see the 'FIFA' beat he gave Pusha, Roc Marciano's 'Thread Count' or even the songs he produced for Esperanza Spalding and the work he did on 'Black Messiah' fitting in with the album.
Overall - it feels like a marriage of Tip's experimentation and their earlier work and they balanced it out pretty evenly. The chemistry between the vocalists never sounds forced. The drawing on the album cover sums up what they did pretty well - the red and green make the character recognizable as the Tribe logo - there's even the cover of 'Low End Theory' as part of the character's body - but there's other new adjustments whch have added more layers to the old formula.
Definitely one of my personal favourite albums this year.
