The Lakers did try to to trade for him. Indiana wasn't budging (because it was the Lakers), so they pulled the offer since they had the leverage. This guy wanted LA to "gamble" for him by grossly overpaying, but dipped on OKC --- a team that did "gamble" on him, 2 years later.
12 months after he refused to even enter FA at the last minute for said reasoning.
