I'm not a car expert, but why would an electric car NOT need gears or transmission?

Gears allow the car to attain higher speeds, torque and horsepower work differently under combustion engines than in electric powered cars. Theoretically they still can use a multi-geared transmission and it may provide better energy conservation, but its not really needed. Less moving parts is better, I guess.

Maybe I should put my dunce cap on, but the engine in the Model S is AC powered...the same technology that Tesla pioneered.

This is exactly the kind of cirucmstance in which our brand of capitalism stifles, rather than encourages creativity and progress. Bad ideas = good if they produce profit. Good ideas = bad if they don't.

Well said. Profit is not the be all end all of human progress and innovation.

There's also supply and demand. There needs to be a demand for new technology. Most people who drive to work everyday don't feel the need to switch to fully electric. If people were more educated and knowledgeable about what's going on in the world like:

- How the expanding middle class in China, Latin America, and Africa will most definitely increase oil consumption, thus, increasing the price of oil for everyone.
- The fact that oil will eventually run out.
- How most of the westernized world is heavily dependent on mid east oil, thus, money leaving the country (money which could be spent and earned domestically).
- Oil lobbyists halting technological progress in the auto industry.
- With an electric car people will have more disposable income since they won't be spending money on gallons of petroleum. (though with electric batteries you'd have to change it every couple of months -- don't know how much that cost).

...then maybe we'll see a widespread switch to electric. I had more points to make but I forgot.

I understand what you're saying brother, but this supply/demand nonsense is not an objective law of existence. I know we get pushed this economic-driven way of life as some sort of universal law, but it is not. Often at time, the "supply and demand" excuse is used only when it benefits companies or certain industries. I'm sure there is plenty of demand for marijuana to be used legally in both a recreational and medicinal way, but the supply gets shut down due to industry lobbying and smear campaigns. The government and corporations play a huge role in providing information for consumers to decide, and they have shown, in conjunction, to manipulate this flow on several occasions.
