This is exactly the kind of cirucmstance in which our brand of capitalism stifles, rather than encourages creativity and progress. Bad ideas = good if they produce profit. Good ideas = bad if they don't.
Well said. Profit is not the be all end all of human progress and innovation.
There's also supply and demand. There needs to be a demand for new technology. Most people who drive to work everyday don't feel the need to switch to fully electric. If people were more educated and knowledgeable about what's going on in the world like:
- How the expanding middle class in China, Latin America, and Africa will most definitely increase oil consumption, thus, increasing the price of oil for everyone.
- The fact that oil will eventually run out.
- How most of the westernized world is heavily dependent on mid east oil, thus, money leaving the country (money which could be spent and earned domestically).
- Oil lobbyists halting technological progress in the auto industry.
- With an electric car people will have more disposable income since they won't be spending money on gallons of petroleum. (though with electric batteries you'd have to change it every couple of months -- don't know how much that cost).
...then maybe we'll see a widespread switch to electric. I had more points to make but I forgot.
