Ah irony, Hornacek took a shot at last year's roster saying that this team wouldn't quit and a day later they continued a pattern of pouncing on bad teams early only to let them come back to win the game. This game was an oddity for a number of reasons. No one on the Knicks was hitting three's besides Lee. We had a on PG, 3 SF's and a C line-up in there for a chunk of the second quarter. Frank played damn near 20 minutes straight in the second half without a breather. Beasley inbounded in crunch time again which probably explains Kanter getting the shot at the game tying three at close. The late futility was illuminating, you could shine a spotlight on THJ sitting on the bench injured. Lee couldn't create against a tight defense, neither could Beasley, KP couldn't get the rock early or do much himself and Frank got himself some decent looks but couldn't finish...Timmy running pick and rolls with KP probably trumps all of that and in a game this close, it could have been a difference maker.
KP: KP started the game like gangbusters and really showed off the value of his game. But over the course of the night he struggled from three and as ball denial pushed him further from the basket, he really never came up with a great way to respond. 9/22 from the field for 23 pts, 6 boards, 3 blocks in 39 minutes. It's close to time to start talking about this kid's rebounding. There are times where he mindfully clears out space for other Knicks to grab boards, but there are also plays where he just watches the rock fall. You'd like to see him take note from Kanter and move on every loose ball since he's too damned tall to be stopped. He'd stand to get some easy looks and draw some more FT's. This game started with fire and was a disappointment imo, but that's because the expectations have shot up from his early run.
Lee: Part of the charm of Lee's game is efficiency but with everyone going bad, he had to force some things and the results were a real mixed bag. 17 pts, 4 asts, 3 boards in 35 minutes for Lee, but he took 18 FGA's to get there. This was another game where Lee's late game execution wasn't there in spite of the ball being in his hands often. That's not really meant to attack him or Hornacek though, without Tim Hardaway it makes sense to go to Lee more. But it also shows our glaring need for a real second option. Aggressive Lee is good, but not when the defense knows it's coming.
Jack: 20 minutes looked like a sweet spot for Jack, who never let up on attacking while he was out there. 11 pts, 8 asts, 4 boards and 3 TO's...has anyone else noticed that Jack has been more TO prone lately or am I crazy? Anyway, defensively you're going to tear your hair out expecting much from Jack. But he pumped in a lot of offense between scoring and playmaking for his 20 minutes out there. Then there's the obvious complaint about missing a FT with a chance to tie and no nearly no time left. Dude had just gotten off the bench from a massive break, but it's brutal to watch free throw shooting play a direct role in two straight losses; this time being a microcosm of all the bricks last time.
Kanter: Robin Lopez only grabbed 6 boards but I spent most of the game thinking "man do I miss that guy." As much as I love Kanter's scoring and rebounding; watching a Center that's just plain good defensively is always a sore sport for me. As a matter of fact, RoLo shut Kanter down from scoring; 4 pts and 11 boards in 22 minutes from the big man. He was 2/7, didn't do anything to standout defensively and in spite of the rebounding edge it was clear that he got outplayed.
Doug McWTF: It was all good just a week ago...I really campaigned hard for Doug to get that starting slot as the porridge that is just right between Beasley's offense and Lance's defense. But you those requests were starting to slip up along with Doug's shooting, which continued to be bad. 3 pts and 6 boards in 37 minutes without hitting a three and also adding 2 TO's. Like Lance usually does, Doug used a lot of minutes to not produce a whole lot. I still think he's the best fit until Tim's ready to come back, but he's giving Horny every excuse to stick with the offensively anemic Lance.
Frank: I might have to start tracking all the open three's Frank gets guys that miss. Hornacek had him out there with Doug, Lance, Beas and KOQ all at once for a while...I wonder who they considered the shooting guard. Anyway, Frank had an up and down night that was more good than bad. 6 pts, 4 asts, 5 boards, a block, a steal and just 1 TO in 28 minutes for the Franc. He's protecting the ball which is a great development. He also attacked a few times, drawing an and-one on an early driving lay-up where his explosiveness flashed some. The bad was 3/10 on the whole and 0/3 from the three point line. The good is that he should have had more assists with the open looks he created and that the 10 attempts show more willful attacking. The defense...well he was giving Kris Dunn such problems that he stayed in the game from 6 mins or so left in the third until fouling out with a minute left in the fourth quarter. He was great defensively, but he also looked tired and shared the play running duties with Lee in the same late stanza. Neither player was effective there and I'd like to see Frank just keep getting these shots. I'll take a loss if we're letting Frank play through mistakes and figure out what it takes to get KP looks when the defense steps up.
Lance: I give Lance a lot of crap, but he flat out played well in this one and I'm not gonna complain at all. 8 and 3 in 28 minutes but the intangibles really did outshine the lack of big statsheet numbers. He was 50% from the field on a night when no one was very efficient and much more importantly, he defended the hell out of Nicola Mirotic whose been cooking. It has to be frustrating shutting down Mirotic all night only to watch the possessions end with Paul Zipser making open jumpers on the other side. Either way, Lance did his job.
KOQ: You know who probably should have played more? Kylo with 9 pts and 8 boards plus an assist over 17 minutes. That's a gang of production on a 4/5 shooting night. KOQ provided everything you could ask for off the bench even while a chunk of his time came in the bizarro forwards only unit. With most teammates playing some level of subpar, it woulda been nice to see him get an extended opportunity.
Beas: Beasley's gotta be the only player that can throw an inbound pass for a wide open three point attempt to tie a game at the buzzer and the entire world is wondering "wtf was he doing." Such are the ways of SupercoolBeas. 3 for 9 from the field for 6 pts, 5 boards, 1 assist and a couple of steals in 15 minutes. Still hesitating to take open threes, still good for a few bizarre rotations on defense and I know everyone's heart sank when he took the ball to inbound late. Honestly, 6 and 5 in 15 minutes isn't bad. I'm not all that mad but if he is our late game go-to inbounder than someone take Phil's pipe away from Jeff ASAP!
Jeff: I've referenced the G,F,F,F,C unit a few times already. I also commented on Frank looking fatigued as hell from getting no breaks in the second half once he got in. You probably just read that I think KOQ clearly should've had more time. Of course I didn't like this performance. I do want to McDermott get starts, but throwing him in during a bit of cold shooting is crappy timing. Ditto for Frank closing games out, I love that but not when you're running him into the ground for 20 minutes straight. Also, I don't want Frank out there just for defense and to watch Lee be the primary ball handler late. I get punishing Baker for the trash game he just had, but three Guards isn't enough for 96 minutes; give Dotson some damned opportunities! Anyway, this is the one step forward and two steps back sense I get from Hornacek often. Things will flash like they're working or could work and he'll either overdo them (Beasley last game) or wait too long to try them out (Doug starting). He's inching closer toward doing the things that I want to see, but somehow making cases against those decisions because of the oddities of how he experiments. In no way can I say that he's straight up doing a bad job. A lot of players have shown development from youth to vets, but I can sure as hell say that there are games where he clearly gets outcoached in ways that likely cost us games. I'm ready for management to make his life easy by shipping some of the vets out and reminding him that developing the youngsters is just as important as winning. Is that G,F,F,F,C unit even seriously trying to win?
