Knicks can't afford to come out lacking energy against the Raptors. If they want to make real noise, they'll need to be competitive with top teams otherwise I'm running to the tank. The lazy first and third quarter starts would have hurt them against some better teams.
Well...if they're gonna play like this, I won't be mad at standing pat and seeing how much noise these guys can make. Tim Hardaway had the glow tonight, KP is putting 20 spots up on impact performances while he struggles with his J, Courtney Lee is going Demar Derozan and Enes Kanter is passing the rock out of traffic...this looks like a well coached team. Now they just need to take this kinda game with them on the road instead of saving everything for the Garden and we really might be looking at a competitive first round playoff team.
THJ: 38 pts,7 asts, 6 boards a steal and a block (on Valanciunas mind you). That was the best game of this dude's career so far and I'm saying so far with confidence that he's capable of having these sorts of outbursts. What stood out tonight was how dedicated to attacking the rack he was. Tim wasn't settling for three's or long two's; he kept his dribble and gave every man guarding him nightmares. On the defensive end, he was active and alert after the first quarter where everyone looked pretty bad. He did everything. Can't tell me that clip of him holding the New York out on his jersey didn't feel reminiscent of Starks screaming into the letters on his chest either fam.
KP: KP struggled with his scoring all night to the tune of 8/21 from the field. But he was still a positive impact player and still pumped 22 points up. He added 12 boards and 3 blocks to go with just really good defense for a majority of the night. He straight up stopped respecting Ibaka's shot, causing a frustration foul from Ibaka but more importantly allowing KP to patrol the paint more often. He especially stood out to me on screens; stepping out to slow down the ball handler, using his full wingspan to make passes to the cutter near impossible and getting back to his man (really stood out in a second quarter sequence). The recent struggles shooting have given way to some of KP's best defensive efforts period.
Lee: In the third quarter it felt like Courtney Lee had enough of Derozan's abuse from the previous 6 quarters. Lee went at Derozan on both ends and it translated to three baskets, an assist and a drawn foul for the Knicks' first four baskets. This was a "chip on my shoulder" Lee that I don't think we've seen before. 15 pts, 7 asts, 5 boards, 3 stls and he was the absolute catalyst of the third quarter monster run. He had Derozan looking frustrated and dude never really recovered fully. Timmy is gonna get the majority of the love and deservedly so but Courtney Lee was on one tonight too.
Kanter: One of my favorite performances from Kanter in spite of less points and boards than you'd expect on any given night. 11 pts, 4 boards, 5 asts, 2 blks, 1 stl and y'all already know what I'm about to harp on. Kanter had 5 assists fam. Twice in the fourth quarter in crunch time, Kanter received a pass near the elbow in post position and turned it into a pass inside to KP who had a mismatch. Teams can switch on KP screens and deny the ball but if Kanter gets the pass and feeds KP, 7 footer to 7 footer, it's going to become a lot harder to stop. Kanter's attempts are down lately but that's coming with less forces and more passes which I will gladly take. Defensively, he also made his presence known with some nice jobs done rotating and protecting the rim (blocked Lowry ugly off the backboard and set up a fast break on one stand out play).
Jack: Far from his best game, Jack got outplayed by Lowry pretty clearly but he was steady enough to ride the kids around him and stay steady. 2 pts, 2 asts, 4 boards and 2 stls in 32 mins. The sooner Frank is ready to start and give us 30 a night the better, but Jack is doing a nice job of not forcing much and not killing us defensively. He's going to lose his match-up on some nights, but keeping it close and keeping the rest of the guys going steady is more than enough to make up for an individual battle.
McDermott: Doug was the first man off the bench and got true sixth man minutes in this one. 26 mins, 8 pts, 6 boards and 1 ast without making a single three. The Garden crowd was READY for him to knock down a trey and continue on from the other night but it didn't happen. Instead they got put backs, offensive boards and good all around work to make things happen on both ends. Watching him chase CJ Miles around screens was entertaining as hell after Miles lit us up last time. He's getting it done right now and has earned his role.
Frank: 7 pts, 1 assist, 1 board and he knocked down a three along with a long two...comfort from longer range will be nice to see. Felt like he had a better game than his numbers suggest in this one. There were a couple of defensive lapses but there were a number of passes to open guys that just didn't end in buckets for one reason or another. I hope he asks Tim for some tips on keeping the dribble and attacking inside...dude's next big step probably comes when he gets rid of the hesitation to take on his man. He's starting to be more confident in his jumper which is a start, he can afford to be plenty more greedy and no one would get mad.
Lance: Fearless leader of the upstart Knicks chipped in 6 boards which was a welcome addition to his usually barren stat-lines. 3 pts and 6 boards but it was a backbreaker three to his credit. He also played nice defense which was all we needed for the second half. He got after it for his 15 minutes and that's all I really want to see.
KOQ: Kyle wasn't about to let another big man show him up passing, so he matched Kanter's 5 assists and chipped in 2 points and 3 boards over a solid 14 minutes. This still isn't the absolute animal from the early games of this season but it also wasn't the lethargic or sloppy KOQ that had shown up in a couple of recent ones. Just solid.
Hornacek: The team had another bad first quarter, giving up way too many three's early...but they started to pick it up in the second quarter and came out of halftime like the Mud Dogs at the Mud Bowl. The defense was stifling, the transition offense was beautiful and a lot of the best ball was played while KP was still struggling. He's got Kanter passing, Timmy slashing, KP defending with gusto, Lee playing with aggressive, Frank looking for his shot, Doug filling the stat sheet without three's...the team is growing, the chemistry is developing and he shortened up the rotation against a tough opponent which helped show the team that this game really mattered. I gave dude a lot of flack for last seasons horrid appearance and the preseason's disturbing lack of any cohesion...but he's earned my respect. Results'll do that.
Sidenote: Pretty sure it was Spike Lee down there reppin' Kaepernick's name across the back...respect.
