The Knicks didn't realize this was a home game until the second quarter. Dudes came out sluggish and sloppy with the bench feeding off of that laziness instead of injecting energy. It was a combination of KP passing out of doubles and Doug McDermott being a spark that got things going. Overall the half-court offense wasn't all that pretty but any time they had the D off balance (in transition and off of offensive boards), the Knicks moved the ball beautifully and did damage. This was weird, it didn't feel very pretty but it was a straight up blowout. They first and third both had sluggishness but when they locked in it was no contest, Blake quit. Let's look deeper

KP: It's a trip that KP had a poor shooting night, turned the ball over 5 times and yet felt like the best player on the floor while matched up with Blake Griffin. 7-20 but still pumped 25 points out, 7 boards, 2 ast, 2 blocks, 2 stls...he did a bit of everything. Honestly his defensive play stood out the most. He frustrated Blake all night. At the other end he struggled with doubles some but also had some moments there. In the second, he made decisive passes out of the first two double teams that got others going. He started the third with a couple of nice buckets and got shot happy which got the double teams breaking him again. But for the second time, he started to read the double or pass more quickly. Seeing him start figuring out doubles is fun to watch, another step in the right direction. The defensive play though...that's exciting moreso than fun.

Jack: I just finished saying that if teams make Jack beat them, we're gonna lose. Well the Clips really committed to the bigs instead of stopping Jack and the dude responded with 11 pts, 7 assists and just a solid all around performance. Not to slight a good game, but it helps that he didn't draw a tough PG assignment to defend against. Either way though, the guy was a steady presence that opened things up with his performance.

Kanter: Outside of a burst of energy in the third quarter, Kanter pretty much owned Deandre Jordan. 12 pts and 16 boards from the big guy and I can't even do any complaining about any glaring defensive flaws in this one. So I'll just point out something I liked. In the third quarter, he went tunnel vision and missed a wide open and on fire Doug McDermott open for a baseline three. Kanter got the free throws but still made sure to find McDermott the next time he got the ball in the post. That was the one assist for dude, an "I owe you one" kickout that I really liked seeing happen.

THJ: 13, 5 and 5 plus 2 steals and a block...somehow he did this quietly. Timmy couldn't find the three point stroke tonight but didn't need it. He attacked the rack well, found other guys (including an absolute beauty to Courtney Lee for three on the break), defended well and made a good hard foul on Blake Griffin that broke the dude's focus entirely. It was a good game through and through yet completely forgettable because he's been that good lately.

Lee: Kind of a ditto with THJ. 11 points, 5 boards, 2 assists, 2 stls and a block...steady defense, 3 of 5 from the field and outside of a couple of oddly dumb passes he was just good. This didn't show the aggression of some recent standout performances but he did streak to the rack for a lay-up like he has in those ones. Dude always has a couple of a stand out hustle plays to go with good defense. It's just known.

McBuckets: Doug McDermott's 5 field goals were all three pointers tonight. He totaled 16 pts and 5 rebounds while also turning it over 3 times. But Doug's stats don't say a damned thing about how much of a positive impact he had on this game. In the second quarter, he knocked a couple of balls loose that became offensive boards for Kanter and KP. He created turnovers with off ball pressure and forced misses with help defense. In the third, the the Clips caught the Knicks sleeping again; Doug came back in and knocked down multiple three's to steal their soul. He was an X-Factor in this game and continues to be one of the pleasant surprises for us.

Frank: 4 TO's in 11 ugly minutes where his defense didn't stand out much and his offense was sloppy. Hornacek said this was likely because dude was under the weather. He didn't get benched in the fourth for poor play, dude was too sick to be a positive contributor. So we'll mulligan this one.

KOQ: Really lazy again in the second quarter...got himself a quick hook and Kanter wound up leading the team in minutes tonight off that lazy second. But in the second half, he had the life back in his game and played well. 4 pts, 6 boards and a couple of really pretty passes including a behind the back beauty that just didn't convert to assists. I want the firy KOQ back but the second half showed promise.

Lance: 2 pts 1 board and 4 fouls in 15 minutes. He was 1-6 which is unacceptable really. But he did play some d and worked hard, so he didn't hurt us but he didn't help either.

Sessions: 4 pts and 4 asts in 12 mins...He honestly did some alright things with the rock all things considered but he's not cracking the rotation any time soon.

Dotson: 3 pts, 2 boards and 1 assist in 11 minutes. He visibly cuts hard all the time and he has a nose for boards. His three pointer was a pretty one though he hesitated on an earlier opportunity. Overall, he's a guy I'd like to see more of but THJ and Lee are balling right now.

Willy: Made a three from out on the wing like they drew it up that way. A little better effort on some screens he set too. He had some pep to his step tonight but 4 minutes isn't enough time to make a statement.

Beas: 4 pts in 4 minutes but also a couple of TO's. Dude can attack and attack but the results will be mixed. If the offense stagnates, he should definitely get a shot but other than that, not a damned need.

Missed the first 3 quarters tonight, but I'm glad we picked up a win. Horny said in the post game presser that Frank was sick & said he wasn't helping the team tonight (Frank said this to Horny). So that explains Sessions minutes, hopefully Frank is never sick again :francis:

Knicks can't afford to come out lacking energy against the Raptors. If they want to make real noise, they'll need to be competitive with top teams otherwise I'm running to the tank. The lazy first and third quarter starts would have hurt them against some better teams.

Knicks winning quite easily after what was an ugly game, Dipset/A$AP/Highbridge show tonight and someone might be actually coming through for me on the pair of the Off White Nike Blazers i wanted after yesterdays frustration.

The Raptors will likely run through us unless Porzingis comes out hot

I think they can play competitively with the Raptors but personnel wise, those athletic wings really hurt our offense. So the defense has to be locked in to create easy opportunities on TO's and outlet passes off defensive boards. The Raptors aren't a tier one team to me. They're a second tier team (close to a guaranteed second round playoff team but beyond that I have questions) and I think a focused Knicks roster can be competitive with those teams...if not, trade the vets now before we fall completely out of the tank race imo.

As an aside: I'm okay with trying to instill a winning mentality and all of that but the low energy starts on the road and twice in a row at the Garden as well combined with our young pieces all quickly picking up injuries (Tim's foot, KP's elbow, Frank's immune system?) I'd rather rest those boys and prep for the long haul. 10-7 would be the best Knicks record through 17 games since 1998 but we've made it into December with some promising records before and completely fell off as the injuries piled up. Sell high, draft high and we won't need to tank again for a decade minimum.
