After avoiding the curse for 15 games, last night was as Friday Night Knicks as it gets. We had Robert Randolph, the play by play guy that sounds like he's doing a Sesame Street character voice all night and Wally's unbridled enthusiasm which is best exemplified by KP turning the ball over down 19 in the third and Wally saying "just three TO's so far? There's a positive." You can hear Wally's smile while he's complimenting Jarret Jack for playing with poise in a 20 point blowout. Play-wise? Sluggish and never able to overcome the physicality of the Raptors. Physical defense on the road is always a challenge for young teams but this team has enough vets not to give up 20 to 5 runs over some toughness and that sure as hell doesn't excuse their inability to string together stops. On the road, you need defense to get you into transitions and easy looks but these dudes gave up 56% from the field...painful.
KP: The Raptors played him physical as hell and he wasn't getting the beneficial whistles that he's gotten in other games. That means he's gotta force the refs to make calls but he'll rarely accomplish that with pull-up jumpers. When he waited to make a move, the double forced the ball out of his hands one way or another. Getting him to attack the rack in games like this will really help out. Defensively, his rim protection shined but his rebounding was weak as can be. 13 points, 4 boards, 4 blocks, 3 TO's...this was Boston bad and if he's laboring because of injury he needs to sit for a while. It's 15 games in and he's aching, you're not gonna limp for 65 games and make the playoffs.
THJ: This dude felt lethargic virtually all night. There were times where he was standing around or walking to his place on the floor because he wasn't expecting the pass at all. This is our gunner and bad shot maker and the offense is going bad; he's gonna be the one we want with the ball in his hands. Hell, he was 5/11 which looks good next to everybody else's shooting form. 13 pts, 5 boards, 1 ast, 3 stls...The rebounding and steals were a nice way to keep producing but 17 million dollars says "assert yourself more." The one night I'd be fine with his shot selection and he doesn't do it smh.
Kanter: Toronto has real bigs and they didn't let him assert himself on the offensive glass like he has in other games. He was a mixed bag offensively, 5/10 is nice and he seemed to get a rhythm as things went on but some of those misses were forced when he should reset. 12 pts, 6 rebounds and the most promising thing out of him is that he's passing more lately especially when he sees a help defender.
Jack: He had a good statistical game but I noticed him more for some defensive lapses than I did anything else. 8 pts, 7 asts, 4 rebounds and he shot over 50%. The thing is, the Raptors stayed home on everybody else a LOT and it meant the only player in any kind of rhythm was Jack while he was out there. He made the right plays, but he's not the guy that's going to ever take over a game or force the defensive gameplan to shift.
Lee: Lee's ineffectiveness scoring and defensively had me thinking about him running off the court holding a hammy last game. 1/9 3 pts, 4 asts, 6 boards and captain reliable had a rare poor performance. Derozan had his way with the guy when we were finally finding a semblance of offensive consistency and that prevented the team from getting to even a single digit deficit. He shot like crap too. The assists and boards keep this from being flat out awful but it was bad.
Doug: My dude laid a lot bricks out there. 2/10 for 7 pts, 4 boards and goose eggs everywhere else. He still had these moments of nice looking defense and he at least keeps defenses spread out but 10 attempts in 21 minutes need to bare more rewards. Especially because he really did get some good looks and just blow 'em.
Beasley: Showed where his value lies in that fourth quarter. He's another one of our guys who won't shrink against physical pressure or let his offensive effort fade. 10 pts, 6 boards, 1 ast and it all came in 12 minutes of play. He was an absolute handful and stabilized the offense for a brief moment.
Lance: He's on the floor mainly for his defense and intangibles, but neither of those attributes was particularly clear in this clunker. 5 pts 1 board so the usual lack of statistical value was there but the "plays that don't show up in the boxscore" which give him value were also missing. The only reason he was visible is that he took 6 attempts in 13 minutes and only managed 5 points on 'em. This was G-League Lance.
KOQ: All signs of KOQ finding his consistency are gone with three straight performances that either "meh" or "trash." 2 points and 6 boards from O'Quinn. Like everybody else he didn't get into his role ever, dude is supposed to be an energizer but he slept walk like everybody else.
Willy: Got 3 garbage minutes to try and make up ground on a back-up C that hasn't had a good performance in a while...didn't do much with it besides one solid assist.
Frank: With the team unable to get stops, he didn't get to push the pace like he has in most games. Defensively this was probably his weakest output of the season too, though he did show on that end in his second half minutes. Since the Raptors were staying home, he did get more opportunities to assert himself and look for his shot but he never really found that shooting stroke. 2/7 for 7 points, 1 ast, 1 stl and overall one of his most forgettable performances. Yet it still stood out that we probably never should have gone back to Jack in the fourth quarter and it felt like we didn't get nearly enough Frank/KP overlap out there.
Sessions: Continuing the "let the PG's do the work" trend, he had 4 points on 2/3 in his three minutes...so there's that.
Dotson: Got an open look in his 3 minutes but couldn't cash it. Nothing else to report.
Hornacek: He tried some things to get guys going. He left KP out a bit longer in the first, used Beasley over Lance in the fourth and then gave KP Center minutes again late. That said, this was another lethargic game for the team overall and he's gotten one motivated quarter from them in the past 8. So he's gotta figure something out because dudes are lookin' too comfortable out there. The team down 20 in a second straight disappointing effort, you should go to your bench and send some warning shots. I also think Frank should get in on those last 3 garbage minutes but it's a pretty minor complaint. Right now, I don't hate his personnel decisions; I just want to see him get these guys fired up.
