A bank accidentally put $120,000 in a couple’s account. Then the pair spent most of it, police say.

I would have moved it to a high yield savings account and collected any interest on it I could till the bank asked for it back. No way in hell would I knowingly spend $100000 in money that clearly wasn't mine.

You not moving anywhere close to that much money without the Feds and bank flagging it.

They got caught in 2 weeks. How long do you need to hold it to make a good amount off interest?
There's nothing you are going to do with that money that you won't have to pay back. Invest it and get a fraud investment charge.

It's not free money. Any part of it you touch knowingly you are responsible for immediately as part of fraud..

I personally don't think they should be punished that severely but a lesson is deserved to instill accountability, selflessness and consideration. Only actual threats to socitey like legit embezzlers and violent non self defense offenders should be charged with life altering felonies.

What they should have done. Buy a property cash asap. Stall the bank a few weeks and work out a payment plan. . Take out an equity loan on the property and use that to pay back the bank. Get a renter in the property to cover the monthly loan payments. Eat.

That teller was most likely fired. Not even most likely, they were fired. Why would you spend money that doesn't even belong to you and you know it doesn't? It says that the bank tried to get in touch with them to set up a payment plan and they dodged them. So the bank filed charges.

Depends on if there was an error from the side that requested the Wire transfer. It can happen though people at the bank are supposed to double check. When I send in a request for a draw on our line of credit at work, it goes through a few people. However, someone internally is on the chopping block for this.
