He's not wrong about anything. I didn't get upset about the Bruno attacks because let's be honest: the type of people who sit around complaining about "cultural appropriation" don't even exist in the real world. You don't see them outside of twitter. And yet I still responded in the other Coli thread with some pretty basic points.
A lot of black people take "black culture" for granted. A lot of black people don't know jack shyt about black culture. Which results in a lot of black people responding to pop culture movements or art with statements like "that's old/out of date" or "that's white music" or "that's gay music" etc etc etc. With no inkling of understanding of where things came from, no interest in doing any research, etc. Meanwhile you got white, Asian, etc kids getting into jazz...going to blues shows...listening to house music. All that shyt was created or heavily influenced by black people....but not many care. So when Kendrick released TPAB I had to deal with idiots saying "Kendrick made an album for white people/critics." Vince Staples released an album last year deeply rooted in LA and Detroit house shyt and people here said "Vince makes rap music for white people."
A lot of young black people dismiss old school sounding shyt because it sounds OLD. Then that shyt blows up with white people. Why do some of us put ourselves into boxes, then get mad when we see other people who are enjoying doing shyt outside the box? I can't understand it. To go further, why do we (rightfully) say black culture is a dominant force in art yet (wrongfully) get mad when someone is influenced by it?? You WANT Bruno Mars and others to make black inspired shyt...that's a good thing. But you know what's a better thing? Black artists having the ability to make whatever music they want, and black fans actually supporting them instead of only listening to...trap music.

What does white people appropriating black music have to do with black fans not being able to push their favorite artists past gold with ease?
It's a cop out really. Does appropriation happen, yes. Is the industry racist, yes. But what does that have to do with YOU not buying YOUR favorite artists music?

However, 40s, meaning that I can't see myself tweeting 1-2000 times per month when I'm 40 and especially not random thoughts about everything and nothing and love yourself like a teenager with a touch of god. I used to follow him because I'm a fan of the music, but I had to cancel his ass because he was taking too much space; disrupting the diversity.

I used to blame the artist.
But music is bad because most people have horrible taste.
The lack of gatekeepers makes it so that the lamest music can be made hot by the crowds.
The average person doesnt care about "the culture"...they just want to nod their head to something.
Which creates this circle of nonsense.
People see what gets play, and they copy it...and all of a sudden the bullshyt is normalized.
Young black kids dont give a damn about the pioneers...and youre considered a lame if you bring that up.
I listen to people talk about the young artist, and they think its normal that a 22 year old rapper knows nothing about Tribe, BDK, Kool G, etc.... because of when they were born.
But if you took this music somewhat serious you would go back and listen to the folks before you.
But thats too much to ask.
Its easier to jump on a bandwagon and blame Bruno Mars, Iggy, or whoever white folks are fuking with at the moment.
But if we dont respect our own music...why expect other folks to?
And the sad thing is these white folks actually do go back and learn from the culture...and then they capitalize off of it.

...truth is, dude makes catchy music and seems like a hard worker that is easy to get along with.
Being a hard worker thats easy to get along with is under appreciated by people who try to understand why certain people are "on" or have amazing careers.

The more we continue to validate DJ Vlad and Akademiks and platforms that reinforce that mentality, the longer it'll take to get proper artists the attention they deserve. There's also a lot of industry folk and potential gatekeepers who are too concerned with relationships and opportunities to take a stand on promoting certain things - it's business I get it - but it is what it is...without some form of regulation or gatekeeping, it becomes a circus

The thing about Bruno and this whole situation is that I know that if he were black and making the same kind of music he’s making (the 90s throwback stuff), he wouldn’t be selling all of these records or receiving all of these accolades.
The audience needs to demand and expect a bit more from the artists getting pushed their way. Labels are very aware of who to market, where and how. It took years of lobbying and petitions to get Black Panther made, and look how it did. Studio execs will be much more open to all black casts now. The actors and industry folk worked together to ensure the film comes out properly.
When we do see Hip-Hop artists and gatekeepers uniting like that? Seems like most want to try and jump on any wave and milk it to their advantage, rather than push the envelope. So we have the climate we have today...
