I listen to these interviews of 90’s WWF wrestlers and personalities and it seems they tend to dismiss WCW as never being on their level, and attribute the upper hand they had in the ratings as solely due to Hall and Nash coming down.

Obviously the NWO was a huge part of their success and the highest ratings they ever got when they beat WWF for 83 straight weeks was during the NWO’s prime, but if you look at the head-to-head ratings prior to Hall’s debut on 5/27/96, they had basically been a tie since Nitro’s inception.

On nights where they were both on at the same time prior to 5/27/96, Raw had a slim lead of 16-15-2.

All these WWF dudes on these podcasts and interviews—can’t remember them all—Bruce Prichard to that racist hoe Sunny to even Hall and Nash themselves talk about WCW like it sucked, it was the bush league and no one watched it til Hall and Nash and came down and showed them how to do it.

Granted, WCW was always more disorganized and less focused and cohesive than the WWF and frankly had too many terrible angles and wrestlers, but the numbers don’t lie. They were in virtual tie for 9 months before the NWO.

I think a lot of WWF people from that era are still bitter about how Nitro had their foot on their necks for a couple of years.

It’s a big what if to think about if Hall and Nash never came down. Bischoff wanted to heel turn Hogan anyway, so they would’ve found another way to do it. Maybe some WWF talent other than Hall and Nash would’ve taken those big Turner checks to come down.

No one won the ratings war. It was Raw 16, Nitro 15 and 2 ties before Hall’s first appearance. Nitro won that night so if you include that it was 16-16-2.

Basically it was a dead heat but a lot of WWF people from that era talk like WCW was never a factor pre-NWO in interviews.

But They Weren’t

You Were Around Watching Right? Maybe Cause I’m A Northerner But No One Talked About WCW

Bishoff Even Said They Had Little To No Merchandise Before NWO, They Didnt Have Any Licensing Deals For Toys, Video Games, Ice Cream Bars, Cause No One Knew Who They Were

NWO Made All That Possible

Did WCW Ever Have An Event In A Football Stadium In Their History?

They Were No Where Near WWF Level

Growing up in Northern California in the '90s. WCW was not even a thing here until the NWO shyt happened. I do remember that WCW show that came on Saturday mornings for awhile.

I think it was bigger in the south and shyt. I have a couple homies from the south and they say WCW was what they watched growing up. WWF was more kid/family shyt.

But that all changed when DX/Austin popped off... just like it changed for us when NWO popped.

The Dungeon of Doom was not tearing the house down. WCW did not become a legit competitor until the NWO.

WCW/NWA was always big in the South due to being on TBS. As a kid I liked wrestling in general and thought WCW was different pre Hogan. I watched WWF the entertainment and the wrestlers I grew up on, but WCW 92-93 I loved because of the actual matches. When Hogan came in and put the cartoon stank on it, it didnt come off until the NWO.

I repeat, the head to head ratings were 16-15-2 at the point that Hall debuted.

All that “my friends weren’t watching it” shyt isn’t relevant.

Ok so how were the ratings a tie then?

I'm in the South and I don't think I was messing with wcw before the nwo. Maybe some people were but as stated, their marketing wasn't that big back then and my friends were watching wwf. Can't recall anything about wcw in those early days.

93-95 wwf is some of the worst shyt ever. Besides a couple things like razor hbk or owen and bret
Yet people only wanna blame HBK in 96 meanwhile bret hall nash all left in 96 and u got the nwo on the rise and every1 fleeing the wwf titanic:mjlol:

Wwf was more popular from being around so long but that shyt was garbage too

Pretty much both companies were ass with little redeeming quality before the NWO hit. Both had hokey shyt early, but I do remember early WCW having faster paced action than the WWF at the time.
They were both a mixed bag to me, but I preferred Nitro from the start up until about 98.

They both had their good and bad parts pre-NWO Monday nights. The WWF had better talent at the top with HBK, Hitman, Undertaker, Owen Hart, etc. but they had no roster depth. If you look at their Royal Rumbles around the time, after the 5 or 6 top guys it was mostly bums. And they still had a good amount of cartoonish characters.

The WCW had the corny ass Dungeon of Doom vs. washed up Hogan at the top, but they phasing away from that. Plus The Giant was dope. He was a draw as a monster heel and he was being brought along as a solo contender.

They had a lot of corny cartoony shyt too (see: the Yet-tay) but they still had Sting, Luger, Flair from the NWA days and loose cannon Pillman. Benoit joined the reformed 4 horsemen. They had a better tag team division than the WWF with Harlem Heat and the Steiners, and they had some dope cruiserweight matches with guys like Benoit, Malenko, Guerrero, Psychosis and Mysterio.

Both companies had that their high and low points around that time and neither was definitively better.
