I'm the exact same way. I always liked the Boys, I even remember wearing my Emmitt Smith jersey to school the day after they beat the Steelers in SuperBowl XXX (I live in Pittsburgh)... but as I kid I had no real interest in actually watching the games. I started going to the sports bar with my dad in 02 and watched a couple games that year.. but the following year, the year we went to the Playoffs with Parcells, I watched every game and have been a die hard since.
