for 15 years I was probably the most casual wrestling fan there was, liked guys like hoegan, warrior, bret, savage, goldberg, Austin, Rock. Never a smark guy like that. Then I got around end of 05 and only peaked in occassionally. When this programme went down with the Pipe bomb and this match the 'E had something there and a lot of fans came back to see what was up. Same thing with DB and the Yes movement that pulled me all the way back in, they had something. They had something here and needed to built upon it 97 style. I dont wanna hear shyt from contratian smarks and size queens bout drawing power and ratings cause we all know what happened after Summerslam deaded that.

This was the one right here

WWE will never be able to have a title match that feels this important and interesting (and can't miss) as this one ever again.

It wasn't just a "this guy is a/my favorite, he deserves the win, I will watch to see if he can win" situation (Bryan in 2013 or even Kofi 2 years ago). It was about the unique possibility of having an unprecedented angle in the company featuring their last legit super star and a fan favorite.

It was the last time a match result felt legit important because the aftermath felt important and intriguing both kayfabe and non kayfabe wise. I think the company is incapable of making kayfabe feel important again.
Then 3 weeks later happened and it got lost in history because the payoff didn't count.

He didn't draw pre Summerslam though. But neither did DX, the odd Nash return,, Cripple H vs Rebel out of nowhere, or Taker vs Michaels 2 the year before...

I mean in terms of building, the pipebomb only happened end of June and then MITB July, they had something there could build on instead of killing his momentum.

One of the best PPV's the company ever had, makes it even better considering it happened during such a shytty era. From the pipebomb to the conclusion of this match, they booked this so fukking well, it's amazing how well it was booked. It's more amazing how badly they dropped the ball after this moment. I think I even made a thread or at least a detailed post about punks booking after this event being the most eregious booking in company history. First and foremost he should've been off TV for a couple of months. Have him show up at random places like a Cubs game an Indy show with the belt. But don't have it filmed by WWE cameras, have it caught by fans camera phones etc. Have a local Chicago affiliate interview him at a Cubs game and the WWE could show, thank the local affiliate for allowing them to use the footage. Make it seem like WWE really has no clue where punk or their title is. But the brought him back a week or two later. The stuff with Nash could've worked. They're promo exchange was entertaining. Nash could've been hired muscle whose some purpose was to attack punk. Not have him wrestle just attack punk on the behalf of someone else. Instead here texted himself, HE TEXTED HIMSELF...WTF DOES THAT EVEN MEAN.. THEY WERE BETTER OFF JUST DROPPING NASH AND FORGETTING ABOUT IT ALL TOGETHER, THAT WOULD'VE MADE MORE fukkING SENSE. But worst of all was HHH going over punk cleanly. I'm not usually a big win and loss guy, in most cases. But this is one of those cases where it absolutely mattered. You took the hottest hand in the company, a guy that was getting attention to outside media outlets, and jobbed him out to a part timer cleanly. That absolutely hurt his momentum. And I contest, this burial was even worse than the Booker T one. The one argument that could be made with they Booker T one was that in 2003, HHH was at least a full time wrestler still. Against Punk he was a part timer at this point. There was no getting the rub or protecting your spot or keeping the strap, it was strictly done to be vindictive and kill his momentum. No one was going to give a fukk about him getting his win back at mania. Maybe if you booked it as a title match where Nash runs in or anyone else costing punk the match and the title on some you weren't supposed to ever be champ, you ran off with our belt, and we'll make sure you never get the belt back too, it could've fukking worked. Instead here lost cleanly in a non title match to a part timer, and if memory serves me right, HHH was a face too. It made no fukking sense. You gave fans no incentive to even see punk get his win back.

When the pipe bomb promo happened I wasn't watching anymore. I read about the promo and watched it right away. It was over if the best promos in years. The MITB PPV was one of the best in company history. The summer of punk single handedly got me interested and watching again. The way they booked everything after the MITB PPV single handedly killed my interest and got be to stop watching again.

Agreed. Wouldn't say the PPV didn't count but they fumbled the spark they had in récord time :dead: :snoop:

And outstanding angle, match, and atmosphere that was completely nuked by Kevin Nash and HHH’s involvement. That’s why triple H will always be wrestling‘s greatest B+ player, because he was never ever better than any of his peers, never beloved like his peers, and always found a way to make things worse when he didn’t have to be involved in the first place. He really is yesteryears Charlotte.
