She did not have a stroke
Why is it so difficult for you to answer a simple question? Had to toss a neg at me rather than just answer? Seems like you know you'd be giving away something. Let's just assume you agree that someone who had a stroke while driving would not be committed to life in prison as a result.
Severe mental illness is just as real as physical illness. People in extreme bipolar mania with psychosis have no reasonable degree of control over their actions and often need to be hospitalized immediately because they are a danger to themselves and others. There are plenty of examples of them jumping off of buildings to their death, running into traffic, etc. When my friend was in the hospital they had to put restraints on him in order to medicate, and when I visited him doped up he was staring at an AC unit and describing to me in detail that God was communicating to him through the "TV". If someone is truly in that state, then locking them up for the rest of their lives because they were sick at one point doesn't make any sense and doesn't serve any purpose.
Just admit that you don't know anything about metnal illness and keep it moving.
