If any of you know any fields that pay well or emerging fields please share. For myself, its pretty difficult choosing a field that you will have guaranteed 6 figures, and also guaranteed job prospect. List pros and cons of each job if you can. I'll start with the easy ones...for instance everyone knows in America if you want job security and a nice check you become a doctor. Cons, schooling is difficult to get in to, long varying hours, so on....

Another one is Retail pharmacy. Most average around 120k, but like i posted in the other thread, the job is really boring and menial. Stressful, and highly saturated field right now. Check the other thread for more.

I have a chemistry bachelors. Im doing a non-thesis masters in synthetic organic chem under a well respected carbohydrate chemist. The research im a part of is pretty interesting and i think i have the resume so far to get into pretty much whatever BUT med school (too much politics i think and the MCAT is no joke). I need something to shoot towards. Im very interested in engineering fields but not sure about the job outlooks.

If you want a guaranteed six figure salary and relatively good job security med school is the way to go.

Engineering you'll start at 50-60 and hit six figures mid career, not as much upside as med though

The 3rd Degree
Even if you went to med school, it would still be like 10 years before you started making any real money (depending on what you specialize in). Not to mention the student loan debt you'd rack up.

Actuary? :yeshrug:

Still gonna take 10+ years to make six figures, though. And you have to pass a lot of tests, which are hard.

I was having this conversation with family, but the sheer lack of jobs that make these difficult ass majors worthwhile is sickening. Is med school the ONLY sure fire way of making guap? And med school is hard as shyt to get in to.

There's also law school. :yeshrug:

Math majors do best on the LSATs.

med school is overrated when you realize how much work, how hard, and how selective it is

you need to be top 5% at minimum to consider that

i would get a doctorate in chemistry(or what i do, Chemical Engineering) and either do private research or fall back on being a professor

at a decent school you can earn upwards 80k, im not sure about private industry. But COSAM degrees almost always need a PhD to be worthwhile

Engineering jobs are pretty safe.

And yeah you may get stagnant at 6figs at some point, that's not exactly a bad thing and if you work 20 years, save properly you can retire a millionaire.

Gonna ask around, but what do you think? Im seriously considering applying to GA Tech for a degree in Chem E. However, I have a bachelors in chem already like i said. Would it make more sense to apply for a masters in it...or apply for another bachelors in chem e? Oh and thanks for the advice but teaching is absolutely out the question lol. A lot of these professors make money but their job is non stop grant proposals, papers and research.

With my degree in chemistry, i've been told a career in patent law could prove to be rewarding...

You should look into it. Believe it or not that's probably the quickest way to making guap compared to med or pharm school, though its riskier. The legal market is terrible but if you're black and patent bar eligible, go to a top school and you'll be caking in three years. Make sure you want to actually do the work though.
