Vargas vs. Salido War Shatters CompuBox Punch Stats Record! - Boxing News

Vargas vs. Salido War Shatters CompuBox Punch Stats Record!
by Cliff Rold
WBC super featherweight champion Francisco Vargas and former WBO titleholder Orlando Salido combined to throw a CompuBox Jr. Lightweight record 1593 power punches- that's a combined 132.8 power shots thrown per round-- Jr, Light Avg.: 71.6.. They shattered Jesus Chavez and Carlos Hernandez previous record of 1475 combined power thrown by 118 punches.

Vargas and Salido combined to land 615 power punches- #2 all time for Junior Lightweights. That's just three combined power shots landed less than the record 618 combined landed by Jesus Chavez W 12 Juan Arias.

LOS ANGELES - Vargas (23-0-2, 17 KOs) retained his title against Salido (42-13-4, 30 KOs, 1 NC) after going the distance in a 12-round blood bath before a nearly sold-out, raucous crowd of 7,378 at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. and televised live on HBO® Boxing AfterDark.

Salido and Vargas exchanged heavy blows in the first round, with Salido getting the better of Vargas in a flurry of punches late in the round. Round four saw Vargas injured, with blood pouring from a cut on his eye obtained by a head butt. The war continued on and brought the crowd to their feet in round six, where Vargas held Salido against the ropes several times with a flurry of punches. The warriors didn't stop and kept the pressure on each other until round 12, which saw Vargas and Salido laying into one another relentlessly until the bell.

Before the man event began, attendees were encouraged to light up their cell phones across the audience and to chants from the crowd of "Ali." Ring announcer Michael Buffer told the assembled crowd the story of Ali and described his life as a boxer and activist, and his impact in the world beyond just sports. He followed with what has become standard for fallen boxers - ten bells rung to give the final count-out to the legend.

Brolic... Alcoholics
the hell were you guys watching after the fight and tribute? :dahell:

Bro the shyt was crazy. I think the name of the show is called Outcast. It's supposed to premier on Cinemax but HBO was showing a special preview of the first episode last night. At first I was like :dahell: but as the story went on I became intrigued. It was actually pretty good. Might have to get Cinemax back for this shyt.

Vargas-Salido Brawl Averaged 833K Viewers on HBO, Peaks at 954K
by David P. Greisman
by David P. Greisman

The best fights of the year are almost never the most-watched ones. Those who tuned into HBO this past Saturday night were fortunate to see a delightful brawl between junior lightweight titleholder Francisco Vargas and Orlando Salido, which ended as an entertaining and acceptable draw.

An average of 833,000 viewers watched the main event, according to Nielsen Media Research. The audience peaked at 954,000 viewers.

The opening bout on the broadcast, featuring Abraham Lopez picking up a controversial decision over fellow featherweight prospect Julian Ramirez, averaged 649,000 viewers and peaked at 693,000.

That makes Vargas-Salido the most watched “Boxing After Dark” main event of 2016. Then again, that’s a small sample size. The only other one this year was heavyweight contender Luis Ortiz’s stoppage of Tony Thompson, which averaged 740,000 viewers and peaked at 807,000.

But otherwise, Vargas-Salido ranks fifth out of the six live, non-pay-per-view boxing broadcasts from HBO so far in 2015. The other four were branded as “World Championship Boxing” episodes:

At the top is Gennady Golovkin’s win over Dominic Wade in April, which averaged 1.325 million viewers and peaked at 1.388 million.

Then comes Sergey Kovalev’s rematch stoppage of Jean Pascal in January, which averaged 1.179 million viewers and peaked at 1.269 million.

In third place for the network is Andre Ward’s victory over Sullivan Barrera in March, which averaged 1.064 million and peaked at 1.152 million.

And in fourth was Terence Crawford’s technical knockout of Henry Lundy in February, which averaged 982,000 viewers and peaked at 1.071 million.

HBO aired Manny Pacquiao’s third fight with Timothy Bradley and Canelo Alvarez’s one-punch knockout of Amir Khan live on pay-per-view in April and May, respectively.

This was Vargas’ first time appearing live on normal HBO. He’d come from behind to stop Takashi Miura and win a world title on the undercard of last November’s Miguel Cotto-Canelo Alvarez pay-per-view. Salido was last seen on HBO in March 2014, when he won a split decision over Vasyl Lomachenko.

Neither Lopez nor Ramirez had appeared on HBO before.

HBO Sports Head Nelson Still Feeling Buzz of Vargas-Salido

By Steve Kim

It's been several days since WBC super featherweight belt-holder Francisco Vargas and Orlando Salido waged their insta-classic at the StubHub Center in Carson, California on HBO. After 12 hard-fought rounds the bout was ruled a draw.

Salido (43-13-4, 30KOs) had been on HBO's airwaves in the past, but not since a March '14 split decision win over Vasyl Lomachenko. The decision to bring him back despite his less-than-pristine record is another example of why the number of blemishes is often overrated.

"I think the important thing is does a fighter deliver a quality fight in the ring and when you give them an opportunity do they step up and peform?" said Peter Nelson, the Executive V.P. of HBO Sports. "From our perspective we care about good television, we don't necessarily care about good records but obviously you want fighters who can compete at an elite level.

"That's why people want to watch pro's at the height of their game and do what they do. And what we saw last Saturday night with Vargas and Salido was exactly that. It's one of the great fights of this year."

Regardless, it looks like 'Siri' Salido, who is now 35 years old, has found a place on the network, as has Vargas.

Nelson states - "Whenever a fighter gives a performance like that you have to take your hat off to him and I think Salido and Vargas both showed their mettle, they're true warriors. They had a high expectations of them going into the ring. There were high expectations and they delivered. I couldn't be more grateful as a fan."
