Stephen Edwards Breaks Down Carlos Adames vs. Julian Williams

In this Q & A session, world class trainer and BoxingScene.com contributor Stephen “Breadman” Edwards discusses his pupil, Julian “J Rock” Williams upcoming showdown against interim WBC middleweight champion Carlos “El Caballo Bronco” Adames that headlines a Showtime Championship Boxing card on Saturday night.
BoxingScene.com How was training camp for the big fight vs Adames?
Stephen Edwards: Very, very good. But applying it to the fight is different. We will see how that goes Saturday night, but I'm looking forward to it. I'm still confident in my guy despite what others may think.
BoxingScene.com: Adames has had some trouble getting the big name fighters to fight him. What made you guys decide to take it ?
Stephen Edwards: Why wouldn't we take this opportunity? This is boxing, fighters fight. I don't operate like that and neither do any of the fighters I train. I feel like all of the ducking Adames talk is misguided.
Adames is a talented fighter but I don't believe anyone is ducking him. Jermall Charlo hasn't fought in 2 years because of personal issues. I don't think he's ducking Adames. He would be the favorite to beat him. If Charlo was fighting other guys and not Adames and Adames was his mandatory then it would be a duck. But Charlo hasn't fought anyone.
Adames doesn't have a great resume and he has only fought twice at middleweight. Certainly no one was ducking him at 154. All of those guys at 154 fought each other in the PBC and when Adames stepped up he lost to Patrick Texeira and Top Rank released him and then he came over to PBC.
So I really don't know who's ducking Adames. I'm not discrediting him, he's a solid fighter with some talent but when exactly was he ducked and by who? People say things and others just run with it.
BoxingScene.com: I know you can’t get into the game plan too much but what is the key to beating a fighter like Adames?
Stephen Edwards: Just being smart. Boxing comes down to a few simple things. One of them is doing the correct things at the correct times.
BoxingScene.com: Does Alberto Puello’s recent positive drug test concern you being that he trains in the same camp as Adames?
Stephen Edwards: Um, you know I don't want to get into that too much because Puello wasn't fighting my guy. I'm not part of Romero's team so it's really not my place to comment too much because as far as I know our opponent hasn't tested positive. But honestly it was concerning and I will just leave it at that. What I can say is VADA is the best thing that has happened to boxing in a very long time and I'm very confident in them.
BoxingScene.com: The sport has always had some eyebrow raising scorecards but recently there have been some real interesting ones. It seems like the favored fighter seems to really get the benefit of the doubt in a lot of cases. Have you noticed that this trend seems to be growing?
Stephen Edwards: I think it's something that has been going on for a very long time but we can only control what we can control. As of right now I don't even know who the judges will be. So hopefully they are all honest and objective. But it's our job to make it clean without controversy.
We've been here before. We also have a good team so if someone is appointed who has turned in bad scorecards there will be an objection. But this is all part of the game. I embrace the process, I don't run from it.
You may not know this Ryan but there was a judge in the Jarrett Hurd fight that I wasn't comfortable with and he was removed. Thank God because Hurd still got 5 rounds on the scorecards. The crowd really can affect the fight. But we are ready. At this point, I will take on all of the worry and Julian will have to do his job and fight his butt off. It's gonna be, what it's gonna be.
BoxingScene.com: With that being said how did you see the Prograis-Zorrilla fight?
Stephen Edwards: I didn't score the fight. So I can't say if it was a robbery. Regis is one of the guys I really like to watch. But he definitely didn't look good. It was a very off night for him. But it's boxing. The other guy had something to do with that. I usually don't watch fights and score them and I was switching channels back and forth. But I can say that Zorrilla was giving him trouble. The rounds were very hard to score though because neither of them landed much. It was weird fight to say the least.
BoxingScene.com: Any last message for the fans?
Stephen Edwards: I don't have much to say to anyone at this point. We are ready to rock.

Been rooting for Julian Williams for a while
But not sure how this would turn out for him. With the amount of wars and losses he's been through, I worry about his punch resistance

Arias knows how to fight like a bytch so he’ll probably decision Lubin

i don’t think Lubin will ever be a champion even if he wins
the Fundora beating was the worst thing that could happen to someone looking to rebuild

Call me crazy I still think Lubin can be champion
He's still young enough to have more title chances and to improve. I think the consensus thought that he has a bad chin is a little overstated
i’ve always liked him and id be happy if he makes it but i don’t think he ever reached the elite level

True..When he got knocked out by Charlo, it was just idiotic recklessness walking into Charlo's right hand
When he lost to Fundora it was being reckless by getting in a firefight instead of just boxing him
I think what is holding Lubin back is more of him being reckless than more of a lack of talent
