does ray robinson derail another hype train?
PBC IS clearly the best thing going, it covers 4 bases (I think showtime has an app, which would make it 5). Net work television, basic cable, premium cable and ppv (maybe an app) . Clearly running shyt and possesses the best stable of talent.Honestly, boxing promotion over the last 20 years needs to be a case study in the future. The way boxing is promoted and broadcasted now has changed so drastically, and Dazn is the latest disruptive force to enter the market.
Haymon's rise behind the scenes before ultimately forming the PBC series and leading the charge from premium networks back to broadcast networks. They still have shortcomings, and perhaps sticking so closely to cable/satellite broadcasting might turn out to be a mistake, as cable cutting is gaining steam while subscription based streaming does seem to be the future. Nonetheless, they're a big reason why boxing is enjoying any mainstream relevance in America today.
Bob Arum's Top Rank promotion being able to remain a top force in spite of a perceived cold war with one of boxing's larger stables, Haymon and the PBC. To pivot out of HBO and into a deal with ESPN, while also going on to heavily pushing their streaming platform shows why Arum has managed to remain atop of boxing for so long. Incredibly crafty for an 87 year old.
Lastly, Dazn I'm sure is something that most boxing insiders didn't see coming. Standalone streaming platform with deep pockets trying to establish itself in the American market. This is where Matchroom and Golden Boy will have to figure out how to turn Dazn into a relevant and competitive product in the states, and Hearn in particular is also going to have to find a way to expand his promotional company into the states.
There's a lot at stake for all the parties involved. Between the networks, promoters, and fighters, we're seeing these companies fight for that top spot.
