Thats one way to look at it. Another way is they’re extremely large cities that cost money to maintain. Thus high taxes. Every metro area in the USA thats in the top five in terms of wealth has “high taxes” (NYC, LA, SF, Chi, DC). The moment those metro areas in the south reach 10 million, 20 million people and match the others in wealth too, the taxes will increase down there too.
