Being apart of BMf must have been
from what i gathered from personal interactions and the interviews i had with a few members....
it was like a BLESSING and a CURSE from thier standpoint
even as much as they try to blend with the "streets" as well as the "music industry" nothing they did could be considered REGULAR
as one BMF cat told me at that time...they couldn't be "regular" now matter how hard they tried because the public domain wouldn't allow it
because they set the bar so high at the time
Especially with Atlanta which to me (in the late 90s) was like a big city with still a "hick town" feel......it just didn't seem international till these cats came thru.....
i remember going to strip spots like Pleasers on cleaveland ave...and it was "accepted"....when the "HEN" (bmf) it was like you had to be in Onyx..or Magic City...
and you had to step it up in terms of everything aesthetic
not only in terms of thier car game and jewelry game..but thier associations...everybody who was anybody from kardashians to hottest cutting edge rapper at the time was associated with them....
i remember one time finishing up a promo interview with an artist who just happened to be managed by a BMF affiliate whom i became well aquainted with ...
and we all decided to head out for drinks at some spot in Duval......nothing specatular about it..just a run of the mill urban hip hop nightclub that was popping on the weekends...
anyway i never forget it...the lady that was taking our cover charge fee was giving my man from BMF a very hard time about entering the spot..
telling him since he had that shirt on .... "you got some damn nerve and balls to wear that up in here"
she was really being a hypocritical byatch at the time which was just a few months after Meech got snatched up and the whole time she was throwing shade at him she was really jocking him....ole boy covered all our tabs and was just trying to enjoy himself..he was a businessman not on some rah rah shyt
he even gave me a few official BMF shirts one of which i still got at the time..one of which i still got today
but real talk i kinda felt bad for duke...cause most of these cats in BMF were just regular dudes whom happened to live a irregular lifestyle that eventually would become the "standard" for ballers down the line...
i remember that same night we went bar hopping after that...and it was just pathetic how the "groupies" would act seeing that BMF logo shirt on this dude...particularly the MALE GROUPIES....
Dudes acted like it was their favorite NBA star athlete that walked in the room....just in awe
but looking back i understand....nobody and i do mean nobody was doing what they did
i remember me and various blogger friends and peers in media all across the country whom were familiar with them sharing stories about them...and it was something to hear
cause at that time..it was definitly unique
i don't recall seeing a guy in a different paper tag foriegn every six months till i met duke..never seen a cat with properties like that...and i never came across somebody so connected in the industry till i met him...and all the while he was just a "street cat" whom took advantage of the networking possiblities that BMF brought about
but as with any situation it's a duality to it.....when it all came "crashing down" ...
haven't seen homie since......
and does make you wonder...WAS IT REALLY WORTH IT?
i personally say no.........and i thank god for being a REGULAR N1GGA
cause like 50 said it was very tempting...but if you got too much to lose on your end...it's best to STAY AWAY FROM IT
