Black Lightning TV Drama Being Shopped To Networks

After the overwhelming response to the debut of Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War and mounting anticipation for the premiere of “Luke Cage” on Netflix, it’s reasonable to assume that more shows and films featuring Black heroes will be coming down the pike.

According to Deadline, the husband and wife writing duo of Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil have partnered with Greg Berlanti to create a series based on DC’s Black Lightning. The project from Warner Bros. TV is currently being pitched to networks.

Black Lightning debuted in 1977 and was one of DC Comic’s first major African American superheroes. Black Lightning, aka Jefferson Pierce, was a gold medal-winning Olympic decathlete from the Southside of Metropolis. He was married with two daughters and became the principal of a local high school. Possessing superior agility and fighting skills, he has the ability to generate and magnify electromagnetic fields.

In the comic books his daughters follow in his footsteps as Thunder and Lightning and were featured in animated vignettes on DC Nation block on Saturday mornings. Pierce was voiced by actor Blaire Underwood.
